

Alan Keith Heidecker, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, at the age of 82, after a brave battle with an aggressive cancer. He was born on June 22, 1943, in Estherville, Iowa, to Francis and Irene (Westergard) Heidecker. Alan lived a life filled with love, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Alan's early years were spent in Graettinger, Iowa where his first job was working at his dad's DX Service Station . He graduated from Graettinger High School in 1961 before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota in 1966, followed by a Master’s degree in 1976. He began his career teaching high school chemistry and biology at Ringstead High School, where he also coached basketball.
In 1966, Alan joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict as a Chemical Core Engineer, where he served honorably until his discharge as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1968. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Parachute Badge, reflecting his dedication and commitment to his country.
After completing his education, Alan began working with the Area 4 Education Agency in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he dedicated himself to improving educational resources as an audiologist until his retirement in 2002. Following his retirement, he relocated to The Woodlands, Texas, to be closer to his family and to enjoy watching his grandchildren grow, which brought him immense joy. During his time in Texas, he also worked for Texas Children's ENT as an audiologist until his retirement in December 2024.
On April 25, 1964, Alan married, Barbara (McConnell) Heidecker. Their marriage, which lasted 61 wonderful years, was a testament to their deep love and devotion to one another. Together, they raised two sons, Daron and Chad, who were a source of pride and joy for Alan. Daron, has two daughters: Sarah Heidecker, Chloe Heidecker, and Chloes's fiancé, Coleman Davis. Chad, with his wife Angela, blessed Alan with three grandsons: Caleb Heidecker, and his wife Kory, Zachary Heidecker, and Nathaniel Heidecker. Alan's grandchildren were the light of his life, and he wholeheartedly supported their interests, whether it was sports, academics, or hobbies.
Alan was a proud charter member of the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City, Iowa, and remained dedicated to his faith and community throughout his life. His character was defined by his kindness, patience, and infectious positivity. He had a unique ability to connect with others, always showing genuine interest in their lives and pursuits, a quality that endeared him to all.
In addition to his family and his work, Alan had a variety of hobbies and interests. He enjoyed archery, fishing, and camping, and he was an avid Houston Astros fan. More recently, he found joy in fly tying, a craft that allowed him to enjoy the great outdoors and create lasting memories with his family.
Alan is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Irene Heidecker, and his sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Sally Berryhill. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Daron Heidecker and Chad (Angela) Heidecker; and his adoring grandchildren.
In honor of Alan’s legacy and his commitment to service, he requests that donations be made to Wreaths Across America, a cause close to his heart, which honors veterans and their families.
Alan Keith Heidecker will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his commitment to his Faith, and his spirited dedication to improving others lives. His legacy of kindness, honor, and joy will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love he so freely gave us.
A visitation will be held on August 11, 2025, from 9:00am to 10:00am with a funeral service to follow at 10:00am at American Heritage Funeral Home, located at 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A committal service will take place at Houston National Cemetery at 11:15 am at 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038. A reception will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home following the committal service from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
