Alice was born in Los Angeles, California on the 10th of June 1924 to the late Angel Horance and Alic Burns. The family moved to Antwerp, Belgium where she grew up until after World War II. Alice then returned to the United States where she met her beloved husband of 64 years, Algernon Lee Chivers, Jr., in Abilene, Texas.
Alice is survived by her husband, Al; daughter, Angelee Chivers of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Cecilia and Tommy Gooch of Katy; and her son and daughter-in-law, Algernon Lee, III and Laurie Chivers of Houston. She leaves three grandchildren, Heather Schuren and husband, Justin, Emily Salem and husband, Blake, and Austin Chivers; and two great-grandchildren, Kaeley and Addison. Alice is also survived by her sister, Philomene D’Hondt; her nephew, Mark Van den Broers and his wife, Patricia; and her great-nephew, Michael Van Den Broers of Antwerp, Belgium. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Louise Berlo of Antwerp, Belgium.
Alice loved all animals and loved to cook. Her wonderfully warm, unique personality enabled her to never meet a stranger and to nurture a great devotion to her family and those around her.
Alice was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 16th of November, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 17th of November, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
The interment is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in honor of Alice may be directed to a charity of one’s choice.
