ALMA RUTH CULLEN CHAMBERS (88) passed away on July 15, 2020, in Houston, TX. Alma was born August 13, 1931, to Oscar and Ethel Cullen in San Antonio, Texas, the youngest of five children: Helen Cullen, Ben Cullen, Vera Cullen Grace and Paul Cullen, all of whom preceded her in death.
During World War II, being too young to serve in the military, she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in San Antonio. She graduated from Harlandale High School in 1948, and then moved to Houston to attend Rice University. She married Edward Vincent Chambers, Jr on July 8, 1950. While raising three sons, she worked at a number of jobs including drive-in movie snack bar cashier, grocery store checker at Weingarten’s, elementary school secretary for 27 years and finally as a tax preparer for H&R Block. She also loved to work in her gardens and was a member of the Houston Educational Office Personnel
Association serving as President one year.
She is survived by her three sons: Edward V. Chambers, III and Carol Chambers of Ponder, TX and granddaughters Erin Barry, Shelley Lowe and Caitlin Chambers; James T. Chambers and Maria Chambers of Corpus Christi, TX, grandson Joseph Chambers and granddaughter Rebecca Chambers; William F. Chambers and Suzi Chambers of Houston, TX, grandsons Robert Diaz and Carlos Diaz, and granddaughters Ana-Maria Robledo, Claudia Montgomery, Cynthia Trevino, and Amber Chambers, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Friday, July 31, 2020 in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. Graveside service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077.
In lieu of usual remembrances, please make donations in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
