Anne Chapman Smith

Born to Warren Norman and Gertrude Barry Chapman, at age three, she and her family moved to Houston, where she lived for the majority of her 100 years.

She was known by her siblings as “Annie,” but her favorite nickname, “Mimi,” arrived 40 years ago with the birth of her first grandchild. She had lost her husband just two weeks prior.

Mimi was raised Catholic, attended Catholic schools and the University of Houston where she met her husband, Cecil William Smith.

Mimi loved all things home decor up until her passing. She had an eye for art and beautiful fabrics. She also had a mind for math and reading blueprints, always finding “a better way.”

Never one to miss a family gathering, Mimi recently attended three great-grandchildren’s baby showers, a rehearsal dinner, wedding, surprise 40th birthday and her wonderful 100th birthday celebration in early March. She always managed to wear a pop of her favorite color, coral. Her hair and makeup were always done and her keen sense of humor always intact.

She is predeceased by her parents, and her siblings Tess Poujol and Norman Chapman.

She is survived by the loves of her life, her children, Will Smith, Pat Wallace (Bruce), and Janet McCloskey (Ray); her grandchildren, Bruce Wallace III, Chris Wallace (Allison), Andrew Wallace (Erin), Matthew Wallace (Caroline), Mary Evans Cravens (Ben), and Ellen McCord (Matt); six great-grandchildren, and her sister, Mary Ann Moss Scroggins (Jerry.)

The family wishes to thank the employees of Holly Hall Retirement Community, and her physicians Dr. Kelly O’Brien and Dr. Ruth Wintz.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 31st of March, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

Mimi entertained us for years with her direct statements and observations. Everyone has a favorite “Mimi-ism.” We will miss her beyond measure, and she left a mark on us all. Thank you, Mimi, for loving us so well.
