

AJ was born March 23, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Antonio Joseph Gambino and Catherine Rita Randazzo. He attended Francis T. Nicholls Senior High School in New Orleans. He joined the United States Navy in 1964 and served as Aviation Structural Mechanic Third Class aboard the aircraft carriers the USS Lexington and the USS Independence. He served as a Louisiana Peace Officer in New Orleans before moving to Houston, Texas. He joined the Houston Police Department on May 1, 1967, Academy Class #35. During his 20 year tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Central, Special Operations, Southwest, and Westside Divisions. He retired in 1987 and then served as a Harris County Deputy Constable Precinct 5. He was a Lifetime Member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and was a Lifetime Member of the Horspitality Committee. AJ had a passion for fishing, cars, and most of all raising Santa Gertrudis cattle at Rose Hill Ranch. He loved spending time with his family. For ten years he helped home school his three beloved granddaughters.
Survivors include his wife Rosemary Frewin Gambino; son, Anthony Gambino III and wife Amy; his son Troy Gambino, his stepson Boone Smith and wife Kimberly; sister Jackie Scuderi and brother Joe Gambino; his four grandchildren Cole Gambino, Anabelle Smith, Gracie Smith and Mary Catherine Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Dena Gambino, his grandson Ashton Gambino and his brother Salvador Gambino.
Visitation with the family will take place at Earthman Funeral Directors, located at 8303 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77024, on September 21, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Remembrances will be held at Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024, beginning at 4:00 pm on September 21, 2025.
The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for September 22, 2025, at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4445 FM 359, Pattison, Texas 77466.
The Rite of Committal will follow the Mass at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079, on September 22, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation in memory of AJ Gambino, at PO Box 1257 Kingsville, TX 78363 or Sacred Heart Catholic Church at PO Box 300, Pattison, TX 77466.
