Artis was born in Cushing, Texas on Jan. 30,1938. Artis father was a farmer by trade and her mother worked in the school. She married early at age 17 to Arthur Clark Jr. She worked as a housekeeper for several wealthy clients within the Houston area before becoming a cashier.
She later went on to marry Samuel Babers and lived her life as a housewife eventually working at the local school cafeteria and a cashier once more. When her husband went home with the Lord she thought her life was set in stone and meant to lived alone.
In 1989 her great niece Delicia Stevens was born and she raised her from birth sometimes referring to her as her daughter but always her baby. She lived a quiet life not leaving the house much other than to see her mother and siblings on the weekends. In 2002 she was diagnosed with cancer of the throat and given an emergency laryngectomy. Her voice might’ve been lost but not her spirit. She continued to fight and thrive for a better way of life. Saying that she only wished to see her baby graduate high school and she would be happy. In 2009 her grandson was born and it notably changed her and brought a joy that hadn't been present for quite some time.
Artis was a woman who marched to the beat of her own drum. Always quick to let you know how she felt and even quicker to show it. When she loved she did so in her own way until her last breath.
