Born on July 6, 1934, on the Harrison Farm in Fulshear, Texas, Barbara was the youngest of six children born to Sam Houston Smith and Willie Bell Anderson Smith, both hardworking sharecroppers. From humble beginnings, she cultivated a deep faith and a lifelong love of learning. She gave her life to Christ and was baptized at an early age at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she also began her formal education in a one-room schoolhouse on the church grounds.
Barbara’s academic brilliance was evident early. Her exceptional aptitude for learning led to her advancement by two grade levels, and she graduated as salutatorian from A.W. Jackson High School in Rosenberg, Texas. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Prairie View A&M College in 1954, enriching her studies with summer sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, and UCLA.
Barbara began her teaching career at Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas. Though not yet old enough to vote, she was already shaping the minds of future generations. During her college years, she converted to Catholicism, a faith that would become central to her life. She went on to serve faithfully in multiple parishes—as a leader in the Legion of Mary, a lay reader, and a Eucharistic minister.
She earned a Master of Library Science from Southern Methodist University and enjoyed a distinguished career as a librarian and educator in Dallas ISD. Later, she moved to California, where she continued her career in education at Paramount Unified School District and her vocation in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at Saint Lawrence Catholic School before returning home to Texas.
Barbara continued her service with the Houston Independent School District, earning a second master’s degree in Educational Administration from Houston Baptist University. She served as the South Division Library Consultant and, after 32 years of public-school service, retired from HISD in 1991. Her passion for education never waned; she continued to serve as a Library Consultant for the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese Catholic Schools until her second retirement in 2000.
A gifted writer and storyteller, Barbara authored three books and numerous articles, always reflecting her love of literacy, history, and culture. She was known for reading to children—often with her beloved toy poodle “Bunny” nestled by her side—bringing stories to life and inspiring young readers.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and all six of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughters, Denise Marcia Chatam Walker, PhD, Dalya Lenea Chatam Greenwood, and Andrea Christina Chatam; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a loving host of extended family and friends.
Barbara Jean Smith Chatam lived a life rooted in faith, guided by wisdom, and dedicated to service. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched—with grace, intellect, and unwavering love.
