Barbara was born on March 20th, 1936 in West Monroe, Louisiana. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mellie and Leroy Sims; her siblings, Wayne Tyler, Dorthea Barnett and Livalane Herbert; her loving husband, Jackie Johnson Sr., and her two beautiful daughters, Vickie Leann Odom and Karen Marie Elliot.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Robert Johnson (Kerry), Linda Parkinson (Gard) and Jackie Johnson Jr. (Marilyn); 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild.
She married Jackie Johnson Sr, fondly known as “Pappy”, in 1952 and they spent 58 wonderful years together. In her early career, she worked for the North Forest Independent School District, where she quickly advanced and spent many dedicated years touching countless lives. Later, she and her husband opened Jack Johnson Upholstery, a small family business that remains family-owned and operated to this day.
A devoted member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church for over 40 years, Barbara served as the church's lay leader, representing St. Stephens at the National United Methodist Church Conference, taught line dancing and baked the best bread in the Bible Village. The love she had for her church community ran deep.
Barbara dedicated her life to her family and those she loved. Her grandchildren will forever cherish memories of warm batches of monkey bread and shortbread cookies, Vacation Bible School sleepovers, dog-eared pages of Shel Silverstein’s books, and long afternoons playing dominoes and board games around the kitchen table.
She was a woman of many hobbies; you would be hard-pressed to ever find her bored. She loved to knit and crochet, gifting her handmade creations to her loved ones. She enjoyed tending to her garden, a passion passed down from her own loving mother. In retirement, Barbara traveled across the country and kept her social calendar full with the Red Hat Society. Always active and always joyful. Though she may be gone, her memory will remain etched into the hearts of all who knew her.
