I didn’t know Maman Shamsi for a very long time, and by the time we met her memory was already beginning to waver. Even so, from the moment I met her and every time I saw her after, she never failed to greet me with a warm smile and remembering embrace, which led me to believe that I had her blessing to join this family as Arianeh’s partner in life, and that she believed I would contribute to her happiness (something that was always a priority for Maman shamsi—the happiness of all her children, grand children, and great grand children).  

From the stories I have heard, she had the strength and unwavering love that I had seen and received from my own grandmother growing up, and I am so grateful to have met another person who embodied those traits and touched so many people with her life and her love. 

Maman shamsi, you will be sorely missed, but your memories live on with all of us. I will never forget your immediate acceptance of me and recognition of me every time you saw me thereafter. We will all miss your warm smile and showering of love, whether it was embracing your loved ones, caring for those in most need, or showering Dexter and the other furry family members with the latest table scraps (because she always wanted to make sure everyone was well fed!). Arianeh and I are so thankful that we were able to have you present at our wedding—this alone meant the world to Arianeh that you could be present for/bear witness to our statement of forever commitment to each other. Know that we will all strive to continue to love and support each other as steadfastly as you loved and supported everyone in your life.

Rest In Peace Maman Shamsi

Maman Shamsi - I’ll remember you not as you were when we lost you, but as you had been and will continue to be, always. An angel too good for this world. Her door was always open - literally. And you would never EVER leave her house hungry...for food, for love, for compassion. I’m beyond fortunate and honored to have had you as my grandmother.

I never quite understood why, if you went into her garage, you saw that she kept EVERYTHING. Little things here and there from years ago. Well now I know why. It’s because she saw beauty in what others couldn’t. She saw love and meaning in what others overlooked. And that is the lens I’d like to view the world through.

I’m beyond blessed to have had you in my life, not just for the love you gave to me, but also for the love and life you gave to my mother Zhila, to Soraya, to Farideh, to Nasrin, to Amir and to Roya. My mom wouldn’t be the woman she is today, and I certainly would not be the woman I am today if it weren’t for you. You truly are the strongest woman I’ve ever known.

It brings me comfort to know that you’re now at peace with Baba T and all your loved ones on the other side, watching over us all.

I love you, forever. We miss you and we thank you for showing us this type of love exists. Asheghetam ❤️

Shamsi, which means “Sun” in Arabic, lit all of our skies with her love. She had the rare gift of making everyone feel special, no matter what. She lived her life for her children and gave selflessly, fiercely and wholeheartedly to everyone around her. The world is indeed a darker place without her, but I find solace in knowing that she lives inside us all and she will forever be a part of us, and in our hearts ♥️

Maman Shamsi was an angel on earth, and I was certain of this by the time I was about six or seven years old. I remember sitting through a religion lesson in school as a young elementary student. As I listened to the teacher explain what angels were, I distinctly remember thinking, “That’s who Maman Shamsi is.”  It was something I instantly and deeply believed to be a fact, and who could possibly deny it? Just as angels are of exemplary conduct or virtue, so was Maman Shamsi. Just as angels exude love, warmth, passion, selfless caretaking and abundant giving of themselves to everyone around them, with neither demand nor expectation to get any of it in return, so did Maman Shamsi. Just as angels are inherently good and pure in their intentions, so was Maman Shamsi. It was clear to me she was a messenger of the supernatural world, personifying so many qualities all human beings strive for. I remember the teacher explaining how angels were placed on earth to protect us, watch over us, and to make sure that we were ok. They always knew what we needed before we even did, and could feel our pain without our having to utter a word about it. Even at that early of an age, Maman Shamsi had already proven to me her sixth sense was no joke, something I know everyone experienced. Feeling like I was quite possibly the luckiest little girl in the whole world to have an actual real life angel by my side, I remember excitedly telling my mom of my epiphany that day — her mother, my grandmother, was an angel, and she was ours. I remember going to Maman Shamsi and letting her know that I was in on her secret, that I KNEW she was an Angel, at which point her burst of love came at me with more force and light than a shooting star: her face lit up with absolute happiness, she screamed, “Vay Naneh!!!!,” and kissed me uncontrollably while simultaneously squeezing the life of my little body until it felt like I could just burst. Maman Shamsi, you were always our Angel, only now you’re home.💘

Maman Chamsi was a Mother to me. I cannot put in words the great sadness I feel. Her memory shall be treasured for the rest of my life. Rest easy Chamsi khanom. I love you 💐

My grandmother was an amazing woman. I will carry her memory and love for life inside of me.  She made me the woman I am today and there are no words to describe how much I will truly miss her.  I hope to be half the person she was. God just gained a precious angel and I know in my heart she is sitting with all of the loved ones we have lost right now and she will always be watching over me. Although she is gone, a part of her will always live on in each of us in my family.  She was such a caring and loving person and taught me kindness and compassion. I will never forget all of her words of wisdom. May her soul Rest In Peace knowing that we will carry on her name and legacy. I love you Maman Shampsi with every fiber of my being. Until the day I see you again rest easy in the hands of god. Although your body is being laid to rest, nothing can ever take the memories we have of you. 

All my best memories in life have my grandmother in them. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known. My only life goal has been to make her proud of me. She’s always called me her little professor. Words can not express my love for her and God only knows how much I’ll miss voice and her smile. As I type this with tears in my eyes I also have joy knowing she’s with my grandfather. I love u so much maman shampsy. My angel has her wings
