In 1965 he married the love of his life, Janice Carter and they started their life together. After graduation he took on the role at the University of Memphis as the executive director of the Alumni Association. In 1979 he took on the same role at the University of Houston, moving the family to Houston, Texas. Prior to the death of his son Ben Jr., in 1996 he served as Scout Leader in Troop 1656 and also served a few years as a youth camp counselor for Sugar Creek Baptist Church. Always supportive of his family, he celebrated their hobbies and interests, his daughter’s obsession with horses and his son’s love of sports. As a family they traveled across the country, spent summers in Florida or visiting family in Tennessee and Mississippi. A love of outdoors, fishing, golf and seeing his family happy helped him live a full and rich life.
In retirement he found renewed interest in one of his favorite past times of old cars, he became an active member in the Lone Star Packard Club and owned several classic models. He always had a love of cars and appreciated the history and old Hollywood glamour of classic cars, his favorite being the Packard. He enjoyed working on cars and showing his cars in the prestigious Keels & Wheels as well as Packard and other antique car shows.
