

Surrounded by his family, Benno Welsh Walters, age 87, went home to be with Our Lord on Friday, February 20, 2015. A native Houstonian, Benno was the second child and only son of his father, Benno Adolph Justin Walters and mother, Sarah Mary Welsh Walters. Benno, a Boy Scout, graduated from Reagan HS in 1944, and was in the class of 1948 at Texas A & M where he was on the swim team, graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1949 after a year in the Navy. He worked for Tennessee Gas and Pipeline Company (that later became Tenneco) his entire career. He met his first wife, Wanda Joy Chandler Walters in Victoria, TX and they married August 14, 1950. After he served a stint in Korea with the Army’s Corp of Engineers, they settled in Houston, TX. They soon became active members of Willow Meadows Baptist Church, where Benno served as a Deacon and was involved in many other ministries, including teaching Sunday School and emceeing the monthly Men’s Breakfasts. After he retired, since he was never one to sit around, his many endeavors included teaching English as a second language classes and trying to learn Spanish for Mission Trips. After the death of his wife, Joy, he began to spend longer and longer stretches of time at his beloved cabin in Buena Vista, Colorado where he met Nancy Grace Chisman. They were married February 25, 1995 and would have celebrated 20 years together this month. He quickly became involved in Valley Fellowship Church in Buena Vista, where he served as a Deacon. Among his other passions was his faithful support of the Buena Vista Pregnancy Center where he participated in the annual Celebrate Walk for Life Event.
Overall, Benno loved: reading, keeping in shape – by walking and doing calisthenics daily; playing Hand and Foot with family and friends; serving others, his family and extended family and most significantly, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Benno was preceded in death by both his parents, Benno Adolph Justin Walters and Sarah Mary Welsh Walters, his sister, Sarah Walters Sweeney and his first wife, Wanda Joy Chandler Walters.
He is survived by, his wife, Nancy Grace Walters; and his two daughters, Cindy Walters Henderson and Eva Walters, Cindy’s husband, Curt, and their children Collin Henderson, Carly Henderson Beckham and her husband, Eric.
Plus his step-children,
Kathy Chisman Asher and her husband Jim;
Karol Chisman Flowers and her husband Ron;
Shannon Chisman Pitzer and her husband Jim; and
Peter Chisman and his wife, Diane.
He was also blessed with step-grandchildren and great grandchildren who all loved him dearly.
