Bobbie Sue Teeter was born 3.22.1927, the third of four children of Burl M. Teeter and Atha Rackley Teeter. She was delivered by Dr. C.R. Teeter, at home on Crow Mountain near Russellville, AR. Born into a family of farmers, she picked cotton, raised farm animals and produce. Bobbie had one leg a little shorter and was teased about walking on one side of the mountain. She attended Pottsville High School where she was cheerleader, played many sports and claimed to be Valedictorian.
On a visit to Galveston to see her older sister, she met her first husband Clarence Gilliam. They moved to Houston where, after he passed away, she was a single parent for many years.
In 1952, she went to work for the City of Houston, progressing to become secretary to Councilman Lee McLemore who helped her through many trials in her life. He introduced her to second husband Ivan Mangone. Although only 5’ tall she was very strong and a survivor no matter what. Upon Ivan’s death, she became owner of Mangone Shipbuilding Co and co-owner of Post Oak Timbers apartments. After selling those businesses, she worked at Texas Commerce Bank as an administrative assistant to the top brass.
In 1981 she married James W. McCoy, and successfully melded two headstrong families who are very close to this day. Jim and Bobbie lived in the Westchester subdivision off Dairy Ashford and Memorial. After Jim died in 2008, Bobbie remained in the home until Hurricane Harvey kicked her out. She moved to Camden Royal Oaks where she delighted in showing off her freshly decorated apartment and made many new friends.
With the Teeter long life genes, she met her goal to outlive her father who passed away at age 95. She exercised, “ate right” all her life, and enjoyed her chardonnay (with water) every night. Never one to hold it back, her family and friends knew they’d hear her opinion. She had “that glare” in her eyes when she wasn’t pleased.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, husbands Clarence Gilliam, Ivan Mangone and James McCoy, daughter Dinah McCoy (Jeff Fenyves.) Survivors include children Candice Goodwin (Nick), Barry Mangone (Melissa) and Shelly Tindle. Grandchildren Dustin Mangone (Chelsea), Corey Mangone (Ashley), Bryan Goodwin (Courtney), Kelsey Goodwin, Heather Tindle, and Amy Franklin. Her great grandchildren, Cameron, Heidi, Brynlee, Ryker, Presleigh, Grayson, Everett, and Wyatt are serving as honorary pallbearers. Also survived by special niece, Sharon Foster (David). The family gives thanks to Patty, longtime helper and Elizabeth, hairdresser and friend.
Since she couldn’t swim, she joins Jim in a crypt high out of flood level. Bobbie wanted flowers during her life because “she couldn’t see them from the casket.” For those who wish to honor her please consider donations to Houston Area Women’s Center, Ashford United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
