

Byron graduated from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy in 1953. Shortly after completely his degree, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War until 1955. He worked as a Registered Pharmacist for several independent pharmacies and at one point owned a pharmacy until retiring from the Eckerd Drug Corporation.
He was a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he found spiritual strength and fellowship over the years through his volunteer work of repairing and gardening at the early childhood school.
Outside of his professional and volunteer pursuits, Byron found great joy tending to his farm for over 67 years. He was a lifelong member of the Texas Forestry Association and was still mowing pasture until last year.
Byron met Barbara Rice on a blind date, and seven months later they were married on July 11, 1959.
Byron is survived by his wife of 66 years and two sons. Craig Martens and wife Lara and Warren Martens. Grandchildren Daniel Martens and wife Katelyn, Joshua Martens, and Elena Martens. Two great-grandchildren, Easton and Palmer Martens. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Meta Martens and sister Marilyn Nast.
May his memory be celebrated as his legacy lives through the lives he touched with kindness, dependability, and integrity. A family graveside service will be held on June 30, 2025, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
