

Candace Sue Best passed away early morning of February 8, 2024 from complications of heart disease and diabetes. She had been in hospice care at an assisted living center in Sugar Land, Texas. She was 75 years old.
Candee was born on June 28, 1948 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to Owen Earl Jones and Frances Maxine Keele Jones. Her mother said she read about a Candace in a magazine and decided on that name and called her Candee. She was their only child.
Being raised in the relatively small community of Mt. Vernon, she went to Field and Hall grade schools, Casey Junior High, and Mt. Vernon Township High School. Saxophone was her instrument in the school bands and orchestra. Upon graduation she attended and graduated from Rend Lake College and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Illinois. She spent a year and a half at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.
On February 21, 1970 she married Michael Joe Best, who survives. They first lived in the Edwardsville, Illinois area until she completed her degree in social work. In 1974 they moved to Houston, Texas and she worked for the State of Texas as a social worker for 21 years. Her social work skills helped in her second career as a volunteer and employee for Citizens for Animal Protection in Houston. Mike and Candee raised 14 dogs and 4 cats over the past many years. They had no children. Candee was predeceased by her parents.
Girl Scouts and band activities were her life in her early years and as a board member of the San Jacinto Girl Scout Council in the Houston area. She loved working with animals and should you feel the need to contribute, please do so at Citizens for Animal Protection in Houston, Texas or just do a good deed for an animal or person. No services will be held.
