Carolyn Brock Hudson passed away on the 29th of June 2012. She was 85. Gracious, refined, loyal and determined, Carolyn was a devoted wife to Harry, her husband of 63 years, and mother to their children, Callie Hudson Paterson and H. Brock Hudson.
Carolyn was born in Dallas on the 4th of December 1926. She was the daughter of Florine Beggs and Dr. Sam Houston Brock and sister of Dr. Sam Houston Brock, Jr. The friendships she made as a student at The Hockaday School in Dallas lasted a lifetime. She followed the Texas Plan for college, spending a year at Chevy Chase in Maryland before returning to the University of Texas, where she joined Pi Beta Phi and was graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in History. After her presentation at Idlewild in Dallas, she married Houstonian Harry Howard Hudson on the 1st of July 1949 and moved to Houston.
In the years following her marriage, Carolyn committed herself to Harry and her children. She also made time for charitable, social and church activities. She transported patients for the Red Cross and served as president of the parent associations at her children's schools. Active in the Junior League, she served twice as chair of the Tea Room. Active in the River Oaks Garden Club, she served twice as a chair of the Azalea Trail and offered her own home to be shown on the Trail in 1992. Sunday lunches or dinners were often spent at the Houston Country Club with family and friends. For many years, Carolyn and Harry were faithful members of the BASIC Class at First Presbyterian Church. Carolyn was as comfortable and adept at arranging flowers at Bayou Bend, playing bridge and entertaining as she was traveling the world or riding a horse or fishing for bass and shooting birds at the Coon Creek Club in Athens, Texas. Throughout her life, she repeatedly demonstrated perseverance, a positive attitude, and an adventurous spirit.
Carolyn's life reflected God's mercy and grace. Only days before a fall in early June, Carolyn accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. With certain knowledge of her salvation, her family rejoices that she is now at peace after years of declining health. In addition to Harry, Callie and Brock, who were in equal measures devoted to her, Carolyn leaves to mourn her Callie's husband, Tom Paterson, and daughters Lindsay and Caroline, as well as Brock's wife, Lauren Hudson, and children Brock and Margaret. She also leaves Helen Arteberry and Eder Ignacio, who were her gracious and consistent care providers.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Carolyn at the home of Callie Paterson from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 5th of July.
The memorial service, in celebration of Carolyn's life, is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 6th of July, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston, where Dr. Bill Heston, Executive Pastor, and Dr. Dick Druary, Director of the Mens' Shelter at the Star of Hope, are to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private inurnment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that contributions, in Carolyn's memory, be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Attn: Jack Modesett Radio Ministry, 5300 Main St., Houston, TX, 77004; the River Oaks Garden Club Memorial Fund, 2503 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX, 77098-1321; or to the charity of one's choice.
