Consuelo "Chelo" Dolores Artaza was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend to so many, and Spanish teacher, went to be with her one and only on October 26, 2022, at the age of 90.
Born in Austin, TX, on September 16, 1932, she was the eldest of two girls born to Dr. Carlos and Elisa Castañeda. She graduated from Austin High School and went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where in the fall of her Freshman year, she would meet her one and only Hugo P. Artaza. They would later marry and live overseas for ten years before returning to Houston and raising four sons: Hugo, Carlos, Gustavo, and Arturo.
Consuelo loved teaching, serving, and family. Before retiring, she had taught for nearly 40 years, with the last 20+ years teaching Spanish at Sharpstown Middle School. Her other gift was serving. Both she and her husband would welcome hundreds of family and friends traveling from South America for their college/graduate studies or doctoral/residency programs, medical visits to MD Anderson, or those coming just to visit. In addition, you would find Consuelo touring Houston, entertaining and cooking countless luncheons and dinners for her guests and friends without blinking an eye.
She loved being married and raising her four sons with her husband, but in her golden years, she absolutely loved being called Abuela, Grandma, and Big Grammy to her 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She would make every effort to travel far and wide to visit her grandchildren and greet them with "Hello mi hijito/a linda", "Tesoro de mi vida ", "mi princesa", "mi reina", and "amorcita linda." And who can forget getting those Happy Birthday wake-up calls at 7 am on every birthday or the reminder calls letting everyone know it was their siblings, nieces or nephews' birthday days? Her family was the center of her being. We should be so lucky to have such a relationship with our families as she did. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her!
