Janie & Dan were my across the street neighbors in Houston.  My mother & Janie were best friends and Dan &Janie became like a 2nd. set of parents to me. There are three things I remember about Dan. First was  his love of John Wayne movies. Second was his love for  German Shepherds . I learned a lot about them from him. Dan helped my Dad out one time after a Doberman dog killed one of our cats. He was a kind man , a cowboy at heart. The third was the love he had for his family.  He loved his wife & children .

Dan and Janie are great neighbors that quickly became extended family!   Will always remember his cheerful greetings, his humor, the love he had for life and his family, chats in the backyard  and his amazing garden!

Dan Hammock was my uncle! My moms youngest brother!!  I have such great memories of Dan when I was just a little tow headed kid running around in the country bearfoot!! He was always a person I looked up to and indeed was my childhood hero.  I haven't seen my uncle in so many many years which is really a shame and reminds all of us to stay close to people that are important in our lives. I have however constantly stayed up with him and Janie and the great family they raised.  He was probably the best natural car mechanic I have ever known and pulled himself up from the bootstraps with not a lot of formal education to being the manager of the total service dept of one of the biggest ford dealerships in the country!!  I honor you Dan and salute you sir!!  RIP and give my mom a great big hug in heaven!  Until we meet again on the other side of the river!!!!

My mother was Dan’s father sister making us first cousins. We lived in Midland and would visit family in Fort Worth once a year always stoping in Merle to visit Leroy and Annie. For some reason, Dan was never home at the time so I have no memory of Dan as a kid.  Fast forward some sixty years and we made contact online while searching family history...re-established contact with cousin Billy Hammack about same time.   We quickly bonded and combined our family research.  To this end we met in Hamilton three or four times and just about retraced the steps of our parents when they were younger. These were great trips and we learned much family history. During this same period Dan and Janie joined Ann and I on a trip to Vegas. A real memory making trip.  Until Billy passed away the three families were in weekly contact one way or another.  Hard to believe the three families had lost contact for some sixty years and then picked up like no time had passed since the 50’s.  Our love of our parent’s family really bound us together as if we were brothers.  This friendship generated some great information about Dan and Janie and thankfully Kay has included a lot of this in her Hammack Family Books.   My FB page has some good pictures of Dan and Janie.  Old Dan was truly one of a kind and loved by all that he touched.  Missed but never forgotten.  See you when the road turns💕

Very proud to call him Uncle. A great and fine man. A true American that loved his country and served it well.

My Pappaw was amazing. He was so funny and sweet yet tough as heck when he needed to be. I've always been his "George" and I always will be. I am so blessed to have 27 years with him.
