

David A. “Tony” Connelly died peacefully on Thursday, the 19th of January 2017, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on the 1st of October 1937, the fourth of six children to Donald L. Connelly and Martha H. Connelly.
Mr. Connelly was born in Bartlesville, OK and moved with his family to Houston at the age of five. He attended St. Anne’s Catholic School, the Kinkaid School and St. Thomas High School. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1959 with a B.A. in Economics and a M.B.A. in 1961 in Finance/Management. At UT, he was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity. Mr. Connelly attended advanced Bank Management Programs at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, and the American Management Association in Chicago, IL. He later served as a counselor at the Southwestern Banking School at SMU for several terms.
His business career included over 36 years in commercial banking in the Houston area. He began with several downtown banks and later was President of Westbury National Bank and Houston Southwest Bank, both members of Southwest Bancshares, Inc.
Mr. Connelly actively served in many charitable organizations, including, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Serra Club, Rotary Club of Southwest Houston, President of UT MBA Club, St. Cecilia and St. Michael Catholic Church.
Mr. Connelly was a long time member of the Houston Country Club and is known for his long walks through Briargrove swinging his golf club.
His greatest pride and joy were his five grandchildren: Garrett and Carter Fitts, and Clint, Rachel, and Catherine Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Thomas Connelly, younger sister, Susan, and former wife, Brenda Baird Connelly. Four children survive him: Don Connelly, Jennifer Fitts (Travis), Larry Connelly, and Eileen Smith, plus 5 grandchildren. His siblings also survive him: Elizabeth McGreevy, Fr. Laurence Connelly, and Dr. Michael Connelly, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his former caretaker, James P. Shine, and the amazing Hospice staff at Silverado, Sugarland.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Sunday, the 22nd of January, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where recitation of the Holy Rosary is to commence at half-past six o’clock.
The funeral mass is to be offered at ten o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 23rd of January, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Wayne Wilkerson, Pastor, is to officiate.
The Rite of Committal is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed towards the St. Thomas High School Scholarship Fund, 4500 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77007-7332.
