Dennis Gordon Yould was born on February 11, 1942 in Liverpool, England to Pemela Hartley Yould and John Yould. The family moved to Sheffield, England when he was a child and he spent the rest of his time in England there. As a teenager, Dennis travelled around Europe with his best friend, Allan Bennett, camping and rock climbing. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield Technical College.
Dennis married Jennifer Burgess on September 26, 1964 and they moved to Houston, Texas the following year (“with a suitcase and $500 – still have the suitcase, wish I had the $500!”). Dennis received his BBA in Economics and Finance from the University of Houston in 1969. He started his long-time career at Burroughs Corporation as a computer programmer and excelled for many years in computer sales at Burroughs and later when the company was bought by Unisys. Dennis and Jennifer enjoyed travelling on the many sales award trips he won, as well as with the family to England every few years, to San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and other Texas destinations, going camping and to North Carolina and California to visit long-time friends.
For 20+ years, Dennis also ran a driving range, as the owner of Southwest Golf Center in southwest Houston. His children had many fond memories of playing and working at the driving range over the years, including Andrew driving the tractor to pick up golf balls all through middle school and high school. After retiring from Unisys and selling the driving range, Dennis worked at Retail Data as a data analyst.
Dennis gave generously of himself to his family and his friends. He loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, socializing with friends and discussing politics. He was an animal lover and together with Jennifer adopted many stray cats and dogs over the years.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jennifer, his children Kathryn Baker (Charles), Karen Smith (Jason) and Andrew Yould (Tiffany), his grandchildren Ben and Chloe Simon and Asa Baker (great grandchildren Lylah and Bowen Baker), Cullen, Tristan and Jenna Smith, and Alyssa and Emma Yould. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Keyworth (Graham) and her family, his cousins Geoff and Elizabeth Varey and family, his brother-in-law Frank Burgess (Karen) and family, his sister-in-law Kathleen Burgess and family and his 106 year-old mother-in-law Annice Burgess.
At the request of Callie and Felix (cats), if you would like to make a donation on Dennis’ behalf, please contribute to the Citizens for Animal Protection.
