Dona Leah Robey Fields was born March 31, 1943 to the late Don Robey and Naomi Parks Robey in Houston, Texas. Dona attended Jack Yates High School in Houston, Texas and received her Bachelors Degree at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. Always yearning for more education, Dona received her Masters of Education at Prairie View A&M University She later returned to school after the birth of her son to obtain a Doctorate of Education (PhD) from Texas Southern University.
Dr. Fields was very passionate about teaching and helping others achieve their educational goals. This began her long, successful career with Houston Community College on October 18, 1972. Throughout her career she helped thousands of students achieve success in their educational endeavors. Dr. Fields was also a mentor to countless staff members and co-workers, always encouraging them to achieve their educational goals and exceed in their professional careers. Along the way she held many titles and received multiple awards with HCC before retiring on August 31, 2011 as the Director of Student Retention and Assessment. She was also very proud to have become a member of various organizations including Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and always looked forward to a formal event.
Dona leaves behind her loving husband of 43 years Willie E. Fields, her son Dedrick Fields (Taryn Biggs-Fields) and one grandson Mason Robey Biggs-Fields. All will undoubtedly hold her memory dear and strive to leave a legacy in her name every day. Dona also leaves behind and will be missed by her beloved nieces and nephew Tonya Sampson, Naomi Westgard (Brian) and Lindsey Sampson (Mandy) and their combined seven precious children. There are a host of other relatives from the Robey and Fields families who will mourn her loss. Dona will truly be missed, she will always be remembered for her encouraging discussions, wise advice and generous heart.
Special measure of gratitude to Ms. Retha Booker, Caregiver. She spent many days and hours caring for Dona, and her mother Naomi in the years prior to Dona needing care. Ms. Booker provided invaluable support through the last years of Dona's life. She was Dona's chauffeur, caregiver and most importantly she became a dear friend. As a family, words cannot express the appreciation we have for her and all the loving care she has provided.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Fisk University to support the Leading Ladies Endowed Scholarship, in memory of Dr. Dona Robey Fields.
