Joanne was born in Richmond, Virginia, to George Meriweather Mosby and Eloise Melton Mosby. She was a devoted and loving older sister to her brother, George, who was five years younger. She was raised in a Christian home and began a personal relationship with Jesus at a young age, confessing Him as her Lord and Savior.
She attended Glen Lea Elementary School and graduated from Highland Springs High School before continuing her education at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Joanne dedicated many years to teaching elementary school, spending the majority of her career at Bear Creek Elementary in Katy Independent School District, where she impacted countless young lives with her kindness, patience, and passion for learning.
Joanne met the love of her life, John Archibald Bennett, on a blind date. They were married on August 27, 1966, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned nearly six decades. Over the years, they made homes in eight different states before settling in Houston, Texas, in October 1983. Together, they built a life centered on love and family, welcoming their son, Brian Carter, in April 1978, and their daughter, Erin Kendall, in February 1982. This August, Joanne and John would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Joanne’s life was defined by her deep and abiding faith. She loved God and His people, walking closely with the Lord and beginning each day in His Word. She found great joy in worship and fellowship, especially at her beloved home church, Second Baptist Church–Woodway in Houston.
On March 28, 2026, Joanne went to be with her Lord following a tragic accident just three weeks prior. While doctors did everything possible, her days were always in God’s hands. We take comfort in knowing that she is now healed and whole in His presence. We rejoice in knowing that she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus as He said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Joanne is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, John Archibald Bennett; her son, Brian Carter; her daughter, Erin Lane (Brad); and her cherished grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Lane (19) and Bennett Harrison Lane (16), all of Houston, Texas.
Joanne was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her life was a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her, and her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
