Elizabeth Mary (Betty) Long passed away on March 27th following a prolonged illness. She was born to James and Ita Moran on December 4, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. She attended parochial schools, graduated from St. Joseph Commercial School, and worked for Western Electric Company in New York. Betty met Mike, who survives her, when he was visiting New York and attended the same fundraising dance. Betty and he were married 58 years ago this past November after Mike, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force, returned from an overseas deployment and was discharged. Mike describes himself as a very lucky man for being allowed to have had such a long and happy life with his beloved Betty.
She is also survived by her three daughters and six grandchildren: Mary Sorgenfrei, her husband Bill, and their children Julie and Brian; Kathleen Muldoon, her husband Eddie, and their children Kayla, Leighann, and Michael; and Anne Fickel, her husband Keith, and their daughter Laura. She is also survived by her brother Tom and his wife Eileen, a niece, and five nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her brother John, and his wife, Danielle.
Betty was a stay-at-home mom when the girls were young and did volunteer work wherever needed. After moving to Houston in 1970, she worked at Spring Branch Independent School District and later for Amoco Production Company. Following an assignment in California, Mike and Betty returned to the Houston area, settled in Katy, and became members of Epiphany Catholic Community where she was a member of the Ladies Club, Forever Young, Second Family Care Team, volunteered at Christus St. Catherine Hospital, and enjoyed bingo on Friday nights. She was a lifetime member of the Irish Society of Houston. Betty had no "former" friends. Her friends from growing up back in Brooklyn to the present day were friends for life and stayed in contact through the years.
Betty was always ready to travel locally and far away, including occasional casino trips, but mostly she liked getting together with her family who will now miss her deeply and remember her fondly. Rest in peace, dear Betty!
Mike and her family wish to express a special appreciation for the caring professionals from Harbor Hospice who attended to her during her illness and to all who sent her prayers and good wishes. A special thanks, also, to Father Tom and Father Martins for their attention and spiritual comforting.
If you wish, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, 1530 Norwalk Dr., Katy, Tx 77450 in Betty’s memory.
