Betty was born in Providence, Rhode Island into the big, loving Irish family of John and Veronica Collins. She was number five of seven children. She was especially close to her Papa. She was a great storyteller and so detailed in her memories of her adventures that you felt like you were right there and could see it all and personally knew all the people in her tales of Rhode Island. She spoke often of a wonderful childhood and loved all of her brothers and sisters dearly. She had that famous Collins sense of humor as did all of her family. She adored children and never saw a baby that she didn’t think was absolutely adorable! She had more energy than three people put together, and into her seventies could clean a whole house from top to bottom and rake and clean a half-acre yard like it was nothing. She loved animals, especially dogs, and welcomed all the critters brought home over the years with open arms. She loved baseball, and she could really throw a ball! She also made the best spaghetti in the world. If you were sick, you wanted to be with Mama as she was the best nurse. She would wait on you hand and foot and made you feel especially loved and spoiled!
As a young girl she dreamed of being a nurse, but that was not to be as at the age of 19 she met the love of her life. A black-haired, blue-eyed sailor. A Texas boy, her Jimmie, who she always described as “easy on the eyes,” which means extremely handsome in the Irish, and the strongest, most determined person she ever knew! She took his hand and he took her to Texas! They walked through this life laughing, fussing, loving, and raising a lot of children. From her adoring children, she often heard the words, “You’re the best Mama in the whole wide world!” Her greatest joy were her children and grandchildren who, in her eyes, could absolutely do no wrong.
In her forties she began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and learned about the hope of the resurrection. This made a profound impact on her because of the loss of their first infant son. Betty was baptized on November 22, 1980 along with her youngest daughter, Karen. She became a tireless preacher of the good news of God’s Kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for at Matthew 6:10. One of her greatest joys was being part of the “Golden Girls” group and all the fun and adventures they had in Jehovah’s service! Betty remained a faithful servant of Jehovah God until her death. Her utmost longing was for God’s name to be vindicated and to be reunited with her children and family in God’s new world.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents John and Veronica Collins, her brothers and sisters, John, Louise, Fred, Gert, and Jean, her first born, mama’s girl, “Patty Annie”, Patricia Ann, her baby son Kenneth Joshua, and baby daughter, Shirley June, plus her best buddy and field service partner, Lillian Primus.
She leaves to cherish her memory, Jimmie, her loving husband of 72 years, her brother Donald Collins and wife Barbara, her special sister-in-law and life-long friend, Sidney June Storenski, her brother-in-law Tommy (Donna), her much loved children, Nancy (Karlos), Michael (Ceceille), David (Kim), Donna, and Karen (Mario), her adored grandchildren, Jason (Lisa), Amanda (David), John, Vashti (Erik), Jacob, Alex, Michael (Rachael), Steven (Katie), Andrew (Korinna), Torie (Jonathan), Lisa (Ryan), Loni, and Nick, seventeen precious great grandchildren, and her old wooden rocking chair that held them all, also her special nieces, Janet Hampton and Kathleen Collins, plus Betty’s special bonus children, Mark Gracey, Ricky and Ethel Simmons, and Stacey and Charles Boyd, along with many other dear family, loved ones, and friends.
A special thank you to Melinda Moreno for her many years of loving care.
We leave our Mama safe and sound in Jehovah’s memory. He will call and she will answer. (Job 14:15)
