Floyd Lynn James, lovingly known as “Poppy,” was born on September 9, 1951, in Corsicana, Texas, to Albert and Mary Jo James. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1970 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University.
Poppy passed away peacefully at his home on December 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 36 years, Linda Gail James; his parents, Albert and Mary Jo James; and his grandparents, affectionately known as Jesse and Charlie Floyd.
Poppy is survived by his favorite sister, Norma Roby of Austin, Texas; his bonus sons, Jim Cheshier and daughter-in-law Melissa Cheshier of Houston, Texas, and Scott Shook and his wife Vicki of Needville, Texas. He was deeply proud of his cherished grandchildren — Makenna Shook, Kodi Shook, Mason Cheshier, Logan Cheshier, and Kinley Shook — who brought endless joy to his life. Poppy is also survived by the latest love of his life, Ms. Carolyn Mattison of Houston, Texas.
From an early age, Poppy found his passion for woodworking in Poppa Floyd’s cabinet shop. It was there that he discovered his gift for craftsmanship, which grew into a lifelong career building cabinets and homes. Poppy built numerous cabinets for friends and family members, always putting his heart into every piece he made. Beyond his own work, Lynn found great joy in mentoring countless young people, sharing his skills and love for home building.
Poppy was a member of Good Shepherd Methodist Church, where he had attended faithfully for the past several years. His faith and fellowship with his church community brought him tremendous comfort and strength.
When faced with his cancer diagnosis, Poppy met it head-on with courage, determination, and an unshakable spirit — fighting bravely to the very end. Those who knew him will forever remember his strength, kindness, and the love he gave so freely to family and friends alike. Poppy led his life by showing up whenever anyone needed a helping hand.
