Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Agapito and Manuela Lopez Huerta; his daughter, Disela Sue “Suzi” Huerta; his brother, Ray (Isabel†) Huerta; and his sister, Adelina Huerta.
Frank is survived by 6 children: Irasema Sami Huerta (Juan) Mendoza, Cynthia Huerta Garcia, Agapito “Pete” (Adriana C.) Huerta, Leticia Letty (Chris) Colwell, and Elizabeth Huerta (all of Houston, TX); and Francisco Huerta Jr., (of Edinburg, TX); 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Carolina H. (Simon†) Diaz, and his brother, Wes (Alicia†) Huerta (of Edinburg, TX) and numerous nephews and nieces.
Frank was born February 25, 1934 in Kenedy, Texas and was raised in Edinburg, Texas. As a young child, he migrated with his parents following crop and cotton. As a teenager, he helped his father work and manage their family service station. After graduating from Edinburg High School, Frank joined the United States Army and was stationed in Korea where he served at the 38th Parallel Line of Combat.
After he was honorably discharged from active military duty and returned from Korea, Frank went on to receive multiple degrees which include a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Police Science and Administration from SHSU and a Juris Doctorate degree from TSU.
Frank held a variety of positions throughout his career in Law Enforcement to include Police Officer and Detective in Brownsville; Prison Guard for TDC in Huntsville; Special Agent with Kingsville PD; Adult Probation Officer in Brownsville; Inspector I with TABC; Criminal Investigator and Legal Assistant for Brownsville DA’s office; Assistant Chief of Police for San Benito PD. Frank went to work with METRO PD in Houston, Texas in 1979 and retired as the Captain of Police in 2005.
Frank was also a proud member of many organizations such as American GI Forum, HAPCOA, COMPTO and LULAC, of which he was President of Council 60 in 1991 and 1992.
Aside from his love for the law, Frank had a lighter side that included his passion for singing, dancing, traveling, and of course family time. He absolutely loved big family gatherings like family reunions, weddings and quiceañeras.
Funeral Arrangements are in the care of Brookside Memorial Funeral Home – Cypress Creek. Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 19 at 6-8 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 20 at 5-8 p.m. with a vigil starting at 6 p.m. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church will hold a mass at 11 am on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Internment with Military Honors at 12:45 pm at Houston National Cemetery. There will be a reception at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church at 1:45 on Tuesday after the services.
