Gordon Walker Duncan passed away on May 3 2014 at his home in Katy, Texas. He was 77 years old. Gordon was born in Reidsville, North Carolina on April 23, 1937. He moved to Charlotte, North Carolina as a young child. It was in Charlotte that he joined the Navy in 1955. His first permanent station was in Boston, Massachusetts. In a crowded restaurant in Boston a young sailor asked a pretty young woman if he could sit at her table, She said yes. That is how he met the love of his life Phyllis. When his tour with the Navy was up, he and Phyllis were married and moved to Charlotte. Gordon went to work for the Charlotte News and then the Charlotte Observer. He was very involved in his church in Charlotte. He held positions of Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer and his most beloved position of Choir Director. Music was the passion of Gordon's life. He grew up singing with his parents and brothers and sisters in church as a child. He sang in bands as a teenager and young adult. He was most proud of his years as a Choir Director, for he found the greatest joy in music in singing and praising his Lord Jesus. In 1976 Gordon and Phyllis moved their family to Houston, Texas and he began work at the Houston Chronicle, where he continued to work until 2006 when he retired. In 1978 He moved to Katy, Texas where he would remain until his death. In his later years his spirit was fed at his home church, Bear Creek Baptist Church. He had such a love for his Pastor, David Welch and his entire Sunday School class led by Bill Case. Gordon was a faithful servant of the Lord. His faith in God was unshakable. When his precious wife Phyllis died in 2013, he never questioned God's plan for his life, instead he wept at her grave and prayed a prayer of gratitude for the time he had been given with Phyllis and all the good times he had with her and his kids as a family. Gordon's life was Jesus first and foremost, his wife second and his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren in third. Gordon was welcomed in his eternal home by his Mother, Susie Mae Duncan, his Father Golden Duncan, his brothers Paul and Doug Duncan and his sister Kitty Duncan. But perhaps the two people waiting for him on the other side who meant the most to him were his great-granddaughter Dakota Cheyenne Long and his beloved wife Phyllis Duncan. Those he left here on earth are his children; Rhonda Long and her husband Ed Long, Clifford Duncan and his wife Joan Duncan, and Diane Nowlin and her husband Jeff Nowlin. His grandchildren Jason Long and wife Jerri Long, Ryan Long and wife Tabitha Long, Mallory Baer and husband Thomas, Lindsay Duncan, Cara Duncan, and Caleb Nowlin. Great-Grandchildren Kaitlyn Long, Mason Long, Shelby Long, Travis Long, Jacob Long. His sister Pat Hurd and brother-law Ed Hurd. His sister Linda Hinson. He had numerous nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. We all celebrate his life, his heart, his integrity and the legacy of future generations. We were blessed to know him and be loved by him. We know that as we read these words he is in the presence of his Master and Savior Jesus Christ and the singing and praising has just begun.
