Dũng was born in Thai Binh, Vietnam on January 29 th , 1953 and was the fifth of seven children of Dung Ngọc Nguyễn and Hiến Văn Chu. Later he moved to South Vietnam to escape the invasion of communism and joined the Republic of Vietnam Airborne Division to defend his home country from communism. Unfortunately, after Vietnam fell to communism, Dũng became a prisoner of war for six years but was able to escape through the friendship he forged with his
fellow soldiers. Dũng, along with his future wife, Nghiêm, escaped on a boat across the Philippines and eventually settled in Houston, Texas in 1982. Here, he created a better life for his wife and family.
Dũng was able to overcome many obstacles such as learning a completely new language, destitution, and discrimination to provide a comfortable and enriched life for his family. He worked mediocre jobs at Domino's pizza and gas stations to support his family as well as to put himself through school to earn his Associate's Degree in Chemistry. He worked over 30 years at Phoenix Electrode/Van London company, climbing through the ranks to achieve the title of Vice President of Production.
Above all, Dũng treasured his family the most. He loved the family dog, Dude, having his mother live with him, hosting large family gatherings, and most importantly, being a father. Dũng learned tennis so that he could play and enjoy it with his children. However, it did not matter what the activity was, he cherished every minute he spent with them. Dũng’s favorite moments with his children were sitting around a table, enjoying good food and talking about each other’s day. He loved being a part of his children’s future as well as reminiscing about all their funny childhood memories, no matter how embarrassing they were. He enrolled his children in as many activities as possible from swimming, tennis, taekwondo, piano, and math lessons giving them all the opportunities he never had. Dũng also made countless sacrifices so that all of his children could attend college debt free, without the burden of finance. He guided his children throughout their lives, always with unconditional love and patience, teaching them hard work, dedication, and perseverance. He is his son’s finest role model and his daughters’ first and true love. His life’s legacy is carried on through his children.
