Helen grew up in the Graham, North Carolina area with her sister Betty. She always referred to North Carolina as “God’s Country”. After graduating high school in 1943 (WWII) and initially pursuing a degree in Physical Education, she soon discovered her passion for nursing. After passing her nursing board exams in 1949, she learned of a new medical center being built in Houston, Texas. Seeing the opportunity for both career and adventure, Helen and 2 friends packed up and moved to Houston. Shortly after, she started working at Herman Hospital, the only hospital that was completed at the time. Several years later, she transferred to the newly completed Ben Taub Hospital, and ended up managing a clinic in the hospital. She spent over 30 years in nursing, and at the age of 94, she still spoke regularly of her fond memories and how much she missed working there.
After arriving in Houston, Helen and her 2 friends rented a house together. She immediately noticed a handsome neighbor named Keith (Thomas Keith Hill), who sang in the church choir. Upon learning this, she joined the choir, and they were soon making beautiful music together.
She is preceded by her husband Keith, her daughter Jane, and her sister Betty. She is sorely missed by all of her joyful friends and her family; Her son Jerry, his wife Kathy and grandchildren Brian and Jenny. Her second son David, his wife Dawn and grandchildren Blake and Hannah. Blake and his wife Charlotte recently blessed her with her second great grandchild- Knox. Granddaughter Cherise (Reecie), and great grandson Jacob.
“ The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the bird for mirth
One is nearer Gods heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.”
Helen probably would have requested your remembrance of her by helping God provide us with a healthy, natural place to prosper. Plant a tree? A Garden? A memory!
