Helen Alberta Spore passed away on the 18th of September 2010 in Houston, Texas, and is at peace with the Lord after a long illness. Alberta was born in Robinson, Texas on the 26th of November 1920 and was the fourth of eight children born to Chris and Hattie Simons.
After graduating from Calvert High School, she moved with her sister to Houston at the age of 17. Alberta attended a business college and worked for an insurance agent where she met her beloved husband Stanley, whom she married just before he departed with the Eighth Armored Division during World War II. After the war, the two made a home in Houston that was often filled with many friends.
Alberta will be remembered for her devotion to family, a feisty spirit, her laughter, how she enjoyed playing cards with friends, along with her love of travel, dancing, and the Astros. Her greatest joy was the time she spent with her grandsons.
Alberta is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Stanley; brothers, Elmo, Kelly, and Jack Simons; and sisters Sarah Simons and Doris Simons Lupton. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Sandra and husband Mark Langford; and by her cherished grandsons, Paul and Will. Alberta is also survived by her sister, Freda Simons Schwenker of Roswell, Georgia and her brother Billy Simons of Flatonia, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Alberta’s devoted, long-term caregivers, Annie Edwards, Sheila Johnson, Ella Gregoire, and Rose Dimmer. The family also appreciates the care of The Hampton Post Oak, Cosmos Hospice, and Dr. Bill Heston of First Presbyterian Church of Houston.
A private graveside service is to be conducted.
