Mr. Nwokolo, I met as a little girl in ogunu Sunday school in Shell camp Warri. He and Mrs Nwokolo were different. They both reinvigorated the sunday school program. There was something different about them. When I later met his niece Ify Ossisioma I told her how wonderful her uncle had been.  How all the little kids in sunday school remembered the family. I was saddened by the news of his passing and came here as I read the heartfelt tribute from his wife I was moved to write in honor of the man who loved his wife truly. Thank you Mr Nwokolo for living a life of love and example, may your legacy live on. Adieu! 

As I read through the tributes it is amazing to see how one man impacted so many lives and in doing so impacted the lives of generations to come. 

Uncle, congratulations on a life well lived. Thank you for leaving an example of what it means to be a man of God, a father, an elder, an uncle, a grandfather, and a friend. 

It is clear no one will ever fill your shoes and that you left this world a much better place than you found it. 

I know you have found everlasting rest in the arms of God. Your memory is a blessing and your legacy a continued encouragement to have faith in God and to love those around us. 

May you rest in perfect peace.

Grandpa as the kids and I call you, it's hard to imagine you're not here with us anymore. I recall my last phone conversation with you, and how you admonished me, told me what God said concerning the situation in question and also told me how much you and grandma love me. 
Since our paths crossed in 2000 when I married into the Amuvi family, you have been a dad in every sense of the word to me.  I could come to you or call you to tell you anything - my deepest secrets, fears and problems, and you always had something good from the scriptures to encourage me, pray with me and tell me about other experiences that can encourage me.  The lord took you at a time when I need you most, when I'm at a crossroads in life.  I made you a promise the last time we spoke grandpa,  
you said , not for my sake , but for the Lord.  I will honor you Grandpa, the kids and I will not depart from the path you have showed us, and we will hide the word of the Lord in our hearts always.  
Go with the Lord Grandpa, there is a crown set for you for the good work you have done for the saints.  We love you, we miss you. Adieu Grandpa.

It's not how long one lives that matters but how well. Your time on earth was loaded with fond memories. You impacted lives here on earth and many attest to that. Our Community Amuvi is devastated by your demise but take comfort that you're in a better place. May the good Lord receive and bless your soul IJN.

TRIBUTE TO OUR UNCLE, MAZI HUBERT OKUGO NWOKOLO

It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that we write this tribute to our uncle, Mazi Hubert Okugo Nwokolo.  He had a wonderful personality - humble, kind, loving, soft spoken, caring and a good soldier of Christ. Your sudden death came as a rude shock. We prayed for a fast recovery but God in his infinite wisdom knows best. Sometimes, words can neither express the pain nor describe loss in any meaningful way. But we thank God for the memories we shared. 

May our Lord protect your family - Auntie Uche, Ugo, ChiChi, Chima, Uzo and all the loved ones you are leaving behind and give them strength to cope with your loss.

We pray that God Almighty grant you safe resting in perfect peace till resurrection day, Amen!!!

So this is it. Or is it? This service of songs brought the separation  home to me. It has been like a dream not real. My heart and mind were not prepared for the news Mama told me especially not having known about the ordeal the whole family was going through till a week after Papa's death occurred. What can I say? It is just beginning to sink in a little,  It has been like a dream. How I will miss Papa. Papa and Mama were blessings to me, my brother and many. Papa and Mama, you came looking for me because Sister Diuto told you about me and asked you to take care of me. You came looking for me in Lagos, even though you never met me. From then on you took me under your wings and became the parents I needed when my parents were no more. You extended the same love to my brother and your house was always open for me anytime I came for official trips to Warri or decided to come just for a visit. I was always welcomed, accepted and lovingly cared for. Your natural children were equally graceful. Our separation from Nigeria to different countries did not stop the connection and caring.  You were only a phone call away,  always calling in and checking on me from Norway while I was in America. You were there with wise counsels , ready to help in any way I needed help in America.  Always kind hearted and understanding and steadfast in loving and caring. Then God's providence brought us to America together again.' It is just so hard to think you are gone.  My heart is heavy but I will be strong. I will be strong because the Word of God assures us of our victory in life and in death.  Death is not the end of life but the beginning of a new and better one. A new life  in Heaven with Daddy God, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Bless His Name) and Our Comforter the Holy Spirit and the whole host of Heaven. I will see you again. I take comfort in that. Therefore I will be strong. It is well. Jesus is still LORD and because He lives, we will continue to live. We have overcome.

You touched many lives with  love ,affection, good counseling, and Godly life.
I had known Hubert as his preferred junior in  DMGS Livingstone House  in 1961. We played soccer, acted in school plays, had early morning devotions, ate in the dining hall and cut grass when it was required. We nutured the Livingstone House garden and made it a centre of attraction for people to visit to obtain collections for weddings, events -free of charge! Mr. and Mrs. Ogoazi will look out of their windows to admire 'the Livingstone House Gardens ' and send for some collections!
Hubert was a great athlete and was loved by all because of his stellar sportsmanship-soccer, 440 yards, relay, hockey--named it he had extra stamina to do it all and do it well .
He was a very disciplined leader-the Livingstone House Prefect 1964 and the DMGS Deputy Senior Prefect-a coveted position loved by all the staff and students. He mentored, negotiated for students with the Senior prefect when required.
I was fortunate to learn from him as he handed over the positions he held -Livingstone House Prefect and Deputy Senior Prefect DMGS in 1965 and Senior Prefect in the DMGS Extension 1967,
Then after the Biafra war he went off to the UK as a Shell Scholar and excelled in Engineering. For many years we were not in touch  until briefly in 1983 when I returned to Port Harcourt to get married and Hubert was there to support us. Then he travelled round the Shell world in big executive positions serving various communities  with his engineering and leadership skills .All along  he continued to serve the Lord and humanity. Then after  many years of hard work in Nigeria, the UK and Europe ,he retired in Maryland to be close to his kids and families. We were fortunate to meet again  with him and Uche in their Home in Houston two years ago

The news of Hubert's passing came as a shock. 
Stavanger memories of NSBC come to mind - potlucks, dinners at each others homes, Hubert's wonderful laugh and smile and sense of humor. Uche's sweater catching on fire on Ormøy, a wonderful friendship with Chichi throughout high school. But also Hubert's strong presence in the church as one of the deacons, his eloquent prayers, and knowing without a doubt that he was devoted to the Lord were a prominent part of his legacy in Norway. 
Your passing leaves an incredibly huge hole of loss for your family and friends.

Tribute to Uncle Hubert

I have struggled with writing a tribute to you dear Uncle Hubert since the news of your passing on the 13th of January 2021, mostly because I couldn’t and still can’t come to terms with your passing.

You have been a long wonderful support for me and my family. It started quite early even before my marriage. You took more than just a cursory interest in my relationship with Obioma. 

During our wedding, you secured the Shell RA Arena for our Wedding reception and Shell guest houses for many of our out of town guests. Did I mention that you were obviously the Chairman at the wedding reception. When we became brand new parents, you and Aunty Uche were around to give us the necessary assistance and tips for taking care of the new born baby. 

Your doors were wide open for me to come to you for any assistance or counsel. You were so down to earth in approach and dealings. You made available to me a space in one of your properties to run my business, and that support made a huge difference in my business life. 

Your lifestyle, actions and conducts were good models of how a Christian should behave. You touched lives in several ways, places and styles. I liken you as a shooting star, because you were a rare but necessary breed of a Christian. You loved the assembly of brethren. You were a great father and a very wonderful husband to Aunty Uche. I thank God Almighty for the gift of Uncle Hubert. May your soul rest in the bosom of the Lord, Amen 🙏

We are saddened by dear brother Hubert leaving us.  We feel a great personal loss & are praying for his family’s grieving.

When we moved to Norway it was ice cold, dark, cloudy, & gloomy, but at his home-Bible study, he and Uche made our lives bright & warm. 

Their home was full of Christian love where we experienced great Christian koinonia.  He expertly led the Bible studies & showed us what Christian love along with an unwavering trust & obedience to the Lord can do in his life & others around him. 

We still remember in his home the wonderful biblical plaque that truly symbolized his & Uche’s relationship with God, Joshua 24:15 “… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Hubert was also the most punctual person that we have ever met. Years later, we still fondly remember him tinkling his little hand bell to begin our studies & later to bring us back from our kitchen fellowship.

As mentioned above, Hubert was unwavering in his trust in & obedience to our Lord.  As an example of this, when his family moved to Norway he discovered that the local church was in the middle of very serious divisions.  Hubert could have decided to not involve himself, he could have just changed churches, but he believed that was not what God & the Bible said he should do.  So he set about to correct the divisions in a godly way, was successful, was recognized as an inspiration to others, & became as a result a deacon.

Hubert was a wonderful man, & since 1994 we have known that God gave him as a blessing to his family, friends, God’s church, & to us.

As a symbol of his life, Hubert’s favorite hymn was “The Old Rugged Cross”. Every time he sang it you could see that he was singing it deeply from his heart directly to his God.

“… Till my trophies at last I lay down, I will cling to the old rugged Cross and exchange it some day for a crown.”

While we will miss Hubert who clung deeply to the Cross, we know he is now Home having exchanged his trophies for many crowns.

Grandpa what a life you lived.  I look back to each time we spoke and the love and wisdom you left me with. Thank you for encouraging me, especially during my time at UT because those were the days I needed it the most. Despite being so far away from my parents, Grandma and you were always home. 
Thank you for my Aunty and Uncles, thank you for taking care of my Mum and being a father figure to her. She absolutely adored you and we in turn did so. Thank you for the love I saw between you and Grandma, an example that is referenced far and wide when people talk about a true partnership. Thank you for being gentle but also firm in who you were, a kind and good man of integrity. 

Glad that we all got to experience your wholesome life.

EULOGY TO MY DEAREST UNCLE, ENGINEER HUBERT OKUGO NWOKOLO

          Mazi Hubert Okugo Nwokolo popularly known in my home as “Uncle Hubert” was my favorite uncle. Everyone in my home knows that he took a special interest in me.  Whenever he came to visit, I would be by his side the whole time until he left. When I heard he passed away a part of me also died.  I respected and loved my uncle Hubert a lot and really cherished the bond we had.
          To most people my uncle was a very lovable, friendly and kind man. He worked for several years with Shell B.P. and took his job and life very seriously. His passion was his family, career, and his church activities of which he dedicated most of his life to be the best he could be. Even though this is how most of the world saw him, my uncle and I had a special relationship. I remember when I was a child, he would visit our family and he would always spend time with me. We would play with my toys or he would read to me. I could tell even at a young age that he really cared for me.  When I graduated from Pharmacy school in Houston, he flew down from Maryland to attend my graduation.  He tried not to miss important events in my life. He was an extremely loving and caring man.
          I learned a lot from my uncle over the years. He reinforced what my parents taught me, that one should always have God in one’s life. While I was on holidays at his house, we never missed morning devotion for a single day. I attended fellowship with Uncle Hubert and Auntie Uche. 
          Uncle Hubert has lived a devout life as a Christian.  He was an upright and just man, humble, charitable, loving, and peaceful. I know he is in heaven with the angels and saints. However, I will miss him dearly. I will miss spending time joking around with him and his positive attitude.  I appreciate everything you taught me and all the time we spent together. Love you always and Rest in Perfect Peace.

Even as a child, I knew that uncle Hubert was different from everyone else.

He always had a calm and soothing presence and would give me big bear hug at very meeting. He was the epitome of dignity, integrity and honor; and I knew that such qualities were rare.

One of his most important traits was his tremendous faith; he loved the Lord Jesus with all his heart. Everyone who came around him was drawn to that light “...your light must shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Heavenly Father”...THAT was my uncle! 

Adieu Uncle dearest! I will miss you more than words can say. Rest in the bosom of the Lord.

Tribute to my In-Law Engr. Hubert O. Nwokolo

To Hubert we called each other “Ocho-Okwu”, sometimes, in-laws come in the form of “brothers from another mother”. That was my relationship with my cousin’s husband Hubert. Little did we know that God is going to call your name that faithful day. In life/death we loved you dearly. You left us precious memories, your love is still our guide. Yes, we cannot see you but you are always by our side. You touched so many lives with your kindness, caring, loving and peaceful nature. You will surely be missed.

Our family chain is temporarily broken and nothing seems the same. As God calls us one by one, the chain will be linked again in Jesus Name, Amen.

UNCLE HUBERT; WE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE BECAUSE OF THE GOOD DEEDS YOU DID ON EARTH. 


Almost shocking beyond words when informed of the death of Uncle Hubert Okugo Nwokolo for I never even heard he had been sick.  Another sad sudden departure of such a great soul who i believe would have loved to bid us farewell. I still believe he didn't live long enough for us to repay his good turn.  A few of such examples  deserve mentioning here.
Uncle Hubert was the reason for a truly unforgettable holiday my young family enjoyed in summer 1995 in Stavenger Norway and every arrangement prior to the trip was clinically perfected. He's that meticulous even while overseeing the Shell Oil international operation in Norway.
Or can I ever forget that our daughter Adaeze had the best of Uncle Hubert and Aunty Uche's retirement time during her undergraduate years at UT Texas. They both literally dotted on her and ensured she lacked nothing. 
During our occasional holiday and business visits, such a great man would be readily available to pick and drop us at the airport. 
In Uncle Hubert,  I realize it's possible to be both a big man and humble man. He was a Christian and a good man who exemplified God's teaching and lived through the Commandments Jesus gave to his flock. There is no doubt that his death will hurt so deeply those of us who will miss him so dearly but  we shouldn't be in doubt about the preeminent position he's now occupying in God's throne.
To Aunty Uche, Chichi,Ugo, Chima and Uzo and the spouses and grandchildren of Uncle Hubert, I ask you to cry no more because Uncle is in heaven, or is heavenly bound.

Dear Grandpa - I don’t have words to express my sorrow.  I spoke to you In December. You said you were steaming.  We talked and laughed- little did I know that was it.  I am very grateful for meeting you in my journey in this life.  Thank you for all the encouragements and fatherly love.  Very grateful.  I pray God comfort grandma and my aburos.  Sleep well.

I met Hubert as one of the mighty prayer warriors in our church's (CCF) prayer room. Although I created the schedules, I immediately learned he was the mighty prayer warrior that I had a lot to learn from. I loved to hear him pray because it was like calling our Lord's presence into the room with us. You could see God's presence by looking at his face. He was always smiling like he had a special secret - the love of God. I still have so much more to learn from his example. There were a couple of times I went into the prayer room for a moment and would find him walking while praying and worshiping God. The worship could be felt in the room. I will always have that picture and example in my mind. 
He had such a great and strong ability to hug that made me feel comforted. I dearly enjoyed the times he and the other tall pastors and men of the church stood around talking after the service. They were giants to me, physically and spiritually and I praise God that He led me to a church with such spiritual giants. There was such laughter and joking whenever they got together. They clearly enjoyed each other’s presence. I could have listened to Hubert with the others all day if they would let me. There would be no end to what I would learn or laugh about.  He had such a great sense of humor, yet in a calming manner.  All of them were taller than me but it was a pleasure, even a gift to watch all these strong giants of faith like Hubert.  I will always remember him in tough times when I need assurance and try to imagine what he would say.  Thank you, Hubert. You will be missed but not forgotten.

 We thank God for the life you lived. It was such a great example of living a life of faith. You're a blessing to God's kingdom. Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Gone but never forgotten. I recall two things among others, your sense of humor and hospitality. When my parents were alive, you occasionally stopped by and said hello to them. A hymn says, thus we would pass from the earth and its toiling. Only remembered by what we have done.
We earnestly prayed when you were hospitalized and believed God that our prayers will be answered. To our greatest surprise, God who is sovereign decided to call you home. 
You have fought a good fight, and finished your course, kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for you a crown of righteousness.  May our Lord continue to bless and comfort your family during this time of grief. Adieu brother, till we meet to part no more. 


These are extraordinary times.
Hubert and my elder brother George, both Dengramites, died within a week of each other, leaving two sisters, Ojini and Uche (nee Ezekwesili) suddenly widows. it wasn't supposed to be like this, but it is...
Hubert was a year my junior at DMGS, and I remember him as a great all-round athlete, something he shared with his wife Uche.  We went our different ways after school, only to be reunited again as co inlaws with the occasional get-togethers that that required.  

From all accounts, he was a god-fearing man who lived out his Christian beliefs in practical ways. That must be some source of comfort to Uche and the family he left behind.  We have all lost a gem of a man, but are reminded by these losses, how all our lives hang by a tenuous string.

Hubert, fare thee well and rest in peace.


We are still in shock and disbelief that  you have left us so soon - our beloved Brother and friend, Uncle Hubert. Your smile, laughter, jokes and love and real and true. The example and legacy you left us here at ACF Washington DC are memorable and worthy of of emulation and Christlike. We are only comforted by the assurance that you are now resting in perfect  peace with Jesus our Lord and Savior,  from your labor, having ran well, kept  the faith  and finished well. To God be the glory, and thank God  you passed our way en route to heaven. Alleluia! The Lord Jesus will take good care of family and they'll  be fine. Amen.

Okugo, my darling husband, the cold hands of death snatched you from us.  What do you want me to do now? 
My life without you leaves me with a deep hole that cannot be filled.
So many people admired the incredible love and kindness that you showed me for these forty five and half years. 

Your gentle, quiet spirit, and your desire to help and support all that came your way, endeared you to many. You were like a shelter to many people. You had 4 biological children, but you also had so many other people who considered you to be a father.

Hubert, you have been my soulmate, my husband, my lover, my confidant, my helper, my sustainer, my adviser, my prayer partner, my teacher . 

I watched you struggling to live. If it were in your own power you
would not have died. You left me without any final words. I never
suspected that you would never come back to the house again.
‘A big tree has fallen and all the birds are scattered in the forest. 


I have searched for one good reason why you left us but I could not find one. You were snatched from us by the cold hand of death.The whole Christian community that know you prayed, fasted, and cried to God for you, but it did not happen like we wanted. 
What else can I say? We prayed that God would do a miracle and give you back to us as a birthday present , but instead He decided to celebrate your birthday with you.

What else can I say but to surrender to you God, but my heart is heavy. It’s not easy, but I will trust in your promises. God, you have given me your promise of guiding me through this new and unfamiliar path, to brighten the darkness and smooth out the road ahead. God, you promised never to leave me nor forsake me. I am holding onto you.

Okugo my love, sleep on and take your rest; lay down your head upon your saviors breast. We love you, but Jesus loves you best.

Daddy Hubert is among the few Original born again believers with a difference from Nigeria and especially in this times. He walked his talk in faith and practice while on this earth. 

He is greatly courageous, firm, and amiably illustrious Nigerian who met and saw opportunities, rights and privileges. He never used it to suppress or subvert justice against the lowly. He was listener, open and accessible that placed him among the reachable in heart and physically. 
Furthermore, his humility, simplicity,credibility, truthfulness added to huge sense of humour and peaceful disposition are remarkably classic, memorable and evergreen to many hearts. 

Daddy Hubert is lovingly receptive, very frank, open minded in listening to the core of issues in a fatherly approach. He is one in millions. An elder statesman that were got honoured among the church and multiple communities he lived, worked and served.  

His life is truly God's reflective love that is emulative. We will miss him as Family, NIFES and the global church from USA back to Nigeria
Rest in the blessed bosom of Lord, the man of peace, and and epitome of love and service. Till we come. PEACE

A TRIBUTE TO LATE BROTHER HUBERT NWOKOLO

Late Hubert Nwokolo while working with Shell in Warri, became a member of our Ministry in the late 1970s.  He was a principled, transparent, and sincere brother.  He loved the Lord and loved the brethren. He took time to visit the brethren irrespective of tribe, and class. He was humble and caring.
He led our Family Life Programme for many years and helped build up many young Christian families. He was a marvelous family life counselor. Families with problems found solutions when they sought him for counseling.
While he was in Norway, he came to Nigeria to buy a house.  In 1992 when my late wife was in need of an accommodation to establish her long-standing vision of an orphanage, brother Hubert called us late 1992 and asked if she has found an accommodation for the orphanage.  My late wife told him, she was yet to find a place.  He then said the house he just bought in “Bendel” Estate was available to her. He told her how to get the keys.  That is how Kings Kids Compassion Home got the present accommodation.
Late November 2020,  he then reminded me of what he had told me earlier. “ You can continue to use the house for the orphanage.  However, if you decide to shut down the orphanage, please return the house to my children”.  What a sacrifice! For 28 years we have used the house without paying a cent.  Surely this will go to his account in Heaven.
When he was transferred to Port Harcourt, his home was a resting place for many including me.
He was an outspoken man at work as at anywhere else.  There was an issue at work that led to the General Manager of Shell Nigeria, promoting his subordinate to become his boss. The intention was to frustrate him to resign.   Late Hubert Nwokolo was a man who affected my life in no small way. We at Souls Harvesters Ministries loved him and his family.

TRIBUTE FOR ENGINEER HUBERT OKUGO NWOKOLO
               Hubert was an all-rounder in Dennis Memorial Grammar School(DMGS) Onitsha in the Sixties. He was a Senior Prefect of the School in 1964 and 1966 in the Upper Sixth Form. 

     Hubert was a star in Sports particularly the 220 and 440 Metres Race. He was also a good Jumper and flew over the Hurdles Race with ease. 
  He also participated actively in Football while he shined seriously in the game of Hockey. His involvement with Sporting Activities and School Administration did not distract him from winning Academic Laurels. 
 He was one of the few excellent Nigerian Scholars sponsored by the Shell Company in British Universities.
                 Although Hubert was one year my Senior in School, he was a good friend and companion as we both enjoyed the holidays at Umuahia where our parents lived, just a seven minutes walk from each other.  
                Engineer Hubert Okugo Nwokolo (Hugo) as some of us called him, gave his life to Christ and grew spiritually and in other dimensions. I was excited when a few years later he got married to my “twin” sister Uche Ezekwesili. They have both lived happily since then.
                   The couple touched many lives positively. I had the privilege of being part of the Bible Study group in their home in Port Harcourt several years ago. I was also hosted by them in Maryland USA.  

Whenever the Nwokolos were in Nigeria, they visited us in Abuja. We recollect vividly the pleasantries at their last visit in 2020, just before the pandemic. We did not know that the jokes and food we shared with Uche & Hubert in our house in Abuja was going to be our last fellowship with Hubert on this earth. 

His demise was difficult to believe but we have a consolation that he lived and worked for Christ so he is in a better place now. May God Almighty grant him eternal rest. Brother Hubert, may your soul rest in perfect peace till we meet at Jesus feet. 

TRIBUTE TO OUR "BELOVED BROTHER & IN-LAW"

Engineer Hubert Nwokolo, fondly called "Brother Hubert" by many of his relations will never be forgotten by many of us who have in many ways enjoyed his magnanimous kindness during his life on this planet. We can never find enough adjectives to describe whom he truly was but can only summarize his person as: A GENTLE, HUMBLE, CARING, LOVING, CHARITABLE, DYNAMIC, PEACEFUL and DEDICATED TRUE CHILD OF GOD. 

Brother Hubert was always never tired of doing good through helping anyone who met him as someone responding to the directives from God. As an Engineer, he was very knowledgeable in his profession and so dedicated to his duties that he was promoted to a top management position within few years of joining Shell B P Company.  For many years he remained a key Manager for the management and success of his Company until his retirement. 

Despite his top management position in his Company, he was also very dedicated to his duties in his family especially to his wife and children to whom he showed so much love and care. His total commitment to his family made it possible for him and his wife to succeed in raising very good well-educated children who grew up to take up responsible positions in the society. 

Our Brother Hubert also had over the years he was alive showed sincerity in his worship of God his Creator. He found time to always be in the forefront of PREACHING and SPREADING the GOSPEL of JESUS and so converted many people to FOLLOW JESUS. He lived a sincere CHRISTIAN LIFE and by his lifestyle, he became THE GOSPEL whom others should EMULATE. 

May God in His infinite mercy Grant you Eternal Rest in Heaven. Amen!!

It has been hard for me to accept that I will not be having my usual uplifting discussions with Uncle Hubert as I drive to work. In the past few months it became almost routine as we chatted about anything and everything. During our conversations, I would ask about Aunty Uche and he would say that “she’s right here” I found that so endearing. We would conclude our chit chat once I got to the Dunkin Donuts close to my clinic with him asking me to greet the lady at the window and I would say of course. I would tell him to stay safe,  he would say “I love you” and I would say I love you too. My forty minute drive to work did not seem like such a drag on the days we talked.

Uncle Hubert was the embodiment of a true Christian and beyond that a good, fair and kind human being. He had a way of bringing out the best in me and others. He listened to me and more importantly heard me. He made me feel and believe I was special. He always told me that God loved me and encouraged me to read different bible verses which in difficult times  I found hard to do. He was my counsellor my mentor, my Uncle H  as I fondly called him.  He also had a way with young people and I am so grateful that my daughter Cookie got to know him. She spoke with Uncle Hubert for hours on end and though she barely remembered him as the nice uncle who made them smoothies in Maryland, she felt that she “could talk to him”. We all made plans for Uncle Hubert and Aunty Uche to come visit us in Pennsylvania after the pandemic but God had another vision.

My dear Uncle Hubert, the last time I heard your voice was on the 24th of December. I prayed hard while you were battling the dreaded virus and I cried when you went to be with our Lord. I am still grieving.  I take solace in knowing you are with our heavenly Father as an angel guiding us all.

May the Good Lord comfort Aunty Uche, your children, grandchildren and the rest of the family.

Elder Hubert Nwokolo was a great mentor - both spiritual and professional. 
He recruited me into Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Warri January 1991 (30 years ago) as a Contract Staff Wellsite Petroleum Engineer. The process was based purely on merit. I am from the Urhobo tribe and he from Igbo tribe and we never met before the interview. Hubert also led a major crusade against corruption in Drilling and Operations Department in Shell (DONW & DONE) leading to the termination of a few employees who were involved in corrupt practices at the time.
We met again in Norway in 1995 when I was on Deepwater Drilling and Completions training with BP/Statoil and he was Technical Manager of Shell in Norway. A Norwegian/American lady teaching me about Norwegian culture, Ms. Karen Bruns, invited me to the North Sea Baptist church where I met Oga Hubert and Aunty Uche. Oga Hubert frequently invited me to their home in Tanager after church on Sundays and drive me back to my apartment in Stavanger. He was such a transparent Christian that he will discuss even career matters with a “small boy” like me including his promotion to Technical Manager position in Shell Norway and his choice between going to Shell Lagos as Technical Manager SNEPCo vs Operations Manager SPDC East after the cross posting. We grew so close that I named my second son Hubert after him. 
When he retired from Shell and moved to Houston, I invited him and Aunty Uche, as Guest Speakers at our Couples Weekend retreat in Christian Family Church. He will always ask of his name sake, Hubert, each time we spoke. He gave my son a gift for being his name sake. 
When we heard of his health challenge, I called my son, Hubert, and told him Uncle Hubert is ill. We prayed together with my wife and trusted that God will heal him, but God decided otherwise. We surrender to His supreme will. Adieu Oga Hubert.

Hubert was kind and humble. He was such a prayer warrior and went to battle for many of us. I remember his faithfulness to serve in vacation Bible school. Such a blessing! We will miss him. 
Hubert enjoy the presence of the Lord and the beauties of heaven. No more tears, no more sickness, no more worries and confines of this human life. Be blessed brother! We will see you one day!

Late Mazi (Engr) Hubert Okugo Nwokolo,  to the best of our knowledge lived a Gracious life during his period of abode on Mother Earth. He was a True family man, Consummate, Dependable and Religious. 

At the work place, he readily applied his profound intellect and energies to the tasks at hand. He never used his office or position to make quick, filthy money, and he never lost focus. In other social spaces, he had a 360 vision, and always acted with the big picture as his backdrop. 

Mazi Hubert had good character, integrity and sincerity. He had carriage but was not brash. On critical issues, he did not wait for who will say it first by being nice, but rather preferred to always take the path of fairness and righteousness. One other thing he did not exhibit was fear – that worst enemy one can ever have to face. He rather opted to be on the side of the qualitative minority and always stood successfully against much larger quantitative majorities without moral authority.

At Baptism,  Mazi Hubert received the vital Power of new life in Christ, and this sustained him at all the various stages of his life’s sojourn and energized him whenever he needed to confront Man’s foes comprising the devil and his cohort of fallen angels. Upon retirement from regular work program, he threw himself into Church activities and enjoyed each moment of this phase of his life.

Mazi Hubert was easily Honest and Resolute and always stood up to oppose injustice and was ever ready to damn the consequences arising therefrom and could not be intimidated. For these and a lot more reasons, Mazi Hubert will be sorely missed. But the Scriptures tell us that our Time is in God’s Hands. So we are comforted.

We therefore ask Almighty God to grant eternal rest to his kind and gentle soul. We equally pray to God to grant Uche,  their children and grand children the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.  

I was in Connect Group after church at Calvary and always listened when Hubert spoke.  He always showed a deep knowledge of the Bible and wisdom.  I certainly prayed for his healing during his illness and did not expect him to receive the ultimate healing and go to heaven.  I will miss him a lot and wish his family will feel the Lord’s comfort, love and  blessings during this difficult time.

I have fond memories of Uncle Hubert from when I was a child, including his joyful wedding to Aunty Uche in Enugu.  As kids, my sister and I vacationed with his family in Port Harcourt, and as adults we exchanged visits around the world.  In fact, it was on one such visit, in his office in Norway that he led me to Christ and has discipled me ever since.  He was not only my counselor and mentor; he was also my friend and confidante.  Indeed, he had a special relationship with each of my four siblings and me.  His is the name we invoke in our family to bring out the best in one another.

Among Uncle’s many wonderful attributes, he was unassuming and non-judgmental.  It made him fun to be around and he had a way of honoring everyone, seeking to understand different perspectives while staying uncompromising to his values.  His love for his family was admirable and I learned so much about being a better spouse and parent from him.   His simple and practical brand of Christianity made him accessible.  When I would encounter other corporate executives who confused me, Uncle Hubert would remind me that “a Christian should be first and foremost a good person.”   He was never too high-minded to render help.      

I feel especially close to Uncle Hubert and Aunty Uche as they had prayed about my future life partner and after I met my husband, Abel, I called them in Port Harcourt to tell them, only to learn that they knew and loved him well because Abel is Uche’s first cousin!  Many years later, Uncle and Aunty would visit us in Shanghai for two wonderful weeks of exploring the spectacular city with its ancient traditions mixed with many world class amenities.  These are among the treasured memories that we will cherish forever.

We prayed for his recovery and grieve his loss.  I know there is rejoicing in heaven as God has called His beloved child home.  May God comfort Aunty Uche, Ugo (Funmi), Chichi, Chima (Omonele), and, Uzo.  May Uncle’s beautiful soul Rest in Peace.


I remember coming over to the Nwokolos every Sunday evening for Sunday School in Warri. Mr Nwokolo was such a pleasant gentleman and this family played an important role in my childhood years. May his soul rest in peace

Mazi Hubert  Nwokolo fervently served our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He walked the walk even more than he talked the talk. His humility,  great sense of humor, communication skills and compassion endeared him to all who knew him. 
Okugo is undoubtedly with the Saints in glory.

It's been so hard putting down my words together in honor of our very own dear Uncle Hubert. Words are not enough for me to express all that he meant to my family and I.  Uncle Hubert was another father to my family,  he was my mentor which is an understatement. 

During my romance with Emeka and our courtship, it was centered around him and our Adorable Auntie Uche. Then, telephone was not common, but I had the privilege of spending hours on the phone talking with Emeka who was far in Lagos then; at the end of our conversation,  Uncle will utter "Unu akpachago, ngwa biazia ka igwa anyi ihe unu na ako". Meaning: you've done talking,  alright,  come and tell us (Uncle and Auntie) what you guys were talking.  Then, I would laugh and run into the room. It was all fun for us all.

Our wedding was chaired by Uncle, our cake baked by Auntie. On my wedding day, I overslept and Uncle and Auntie trooped to the room, “Bride, do you know the time? "Don’t keep Emeka waiting for too long" Uncle said to me. He made Shell Guest Houses available for all the guests that came from out of town. Some guests that had accommodations else where abandoned them for Shell Guest House.

Uncle never believed that I could be safe out there without being driven around. I was driven to work and back.

In our marriage,  Uncle was there for us, in our welfare and security in Port Harcourt. He was there for us, despite his busy schedule at work, Uncle would put calls on hold to know why I'm calling him during work hours, "Obii-Special, odikwa nma" meaning: Is  everything alright? Are you ok? In the lives of my siblings,  he was there for us all.

Uncle had special name for every one around him - ‘Obii-Special was mine. Oh my God! Who will call me Obii-Special!
Dear Lord,  I just want to thank you for the life of your servant Uncle Hubert, and thank you for the entire family.

Indeed, we are only remembered by what we have done. Uncle Hubert, thank you for being an inspiration with Aunt Uche to me in marriage, Christian life and personality. Your legacy will live on. Though we prayed for your recovery, God has called His saint home. My family and I deeply appreciate you and Aunt Uche’s extreme kindness when I had my ‘miracle’ baby in the US. God bless your kind soul real good!

Departure of a True Saint!

A TRUE Saint has gone to be with the Lord! Most sad to receive the shocking news about the loss of my highly respected and loved Hubert! My wife & I immediately spoke to his wife Aunty Uche (as my wife would always call her) and were comforted that she is well strengthened from the Lord!

I learnt (as I was a much junior fellow to Hubert- didn't meet him in DMGS) that he was a Deputy Senior Prefect in the O-level school and later a Senior Prefect in the Higher-level school extension in 1965; a distinguished athlete and a Shell scholar of distinction! In Shell where I had the privilege of meeting him, he was not just universally acknowledged as a Godly man, he was a firm believer in Business Integrity, diligence & transparency! He was also an indefatigable fighter for truth, fairness & justice and many examples can readily buttress this unique personality! Overall, friends and foes alike would readily agree to Hubert's tenacity for delivery excellence as well as intrinsic diligence, discipline, simplicity and humility; little wonder he played very senior & sensitive roles in Shell before retirement. 

I will painfully take solace in the fact that I saw him once again in 2019 when my wife & I visited his Houston residence as we attended the wedding of a family friend’s daughter in Dallas. During the visit we were warmly received with food, drinks & long chats (characteristic of himself & amiable wife). What a world!

His most recent donations to the DEF (in September & October 2020 respectively) readily provided a glimpse of his passion & patriot zeal for DMGS and DOBA! Clearly, a 'gentle giant' and a true "Human of DMGS" has left this mother earth, Adieu!

May GOD grant his gentle soul a deserved rest and perfect Peace and give his family the strength & succour to cope with his loss, Amen!

A Tribute to my very good friend – Hubert Nwokolo

I want to add my voice to that of many Dengramites who have expressed their shock at the passing of Hubert Nwokolo on January 13, 2021.

I have known Hubert from our days in DMGS 1961 – 1966. We were together in Livingston house in the main school for four years & in the higher school section for two years.
We met again in Houston Texas in 2008 at the 4th DOBANA biennial convention. In 2011, he attended our daughter’s wedding in Houston TX.

When I moved to Houston from South Carolina in 2016, we became neighbors in north east of Houston and exchanged visits.  He came to my 70th birthday reception in 2018 with his wife, Uche.
Hubert was an outstanding person in all respects. He was very athletic in DMGS. He was very dependable, simple, kind, peaceful, friendly, humble, and jovial. We commiserate with Uche, their children and grandchildren in his demise, and pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear this colossal loss. It is said “To the well - organized mind, death is but the next great adventure” Go in peace my friend and role model.

We first knew the Nwokolo’s in Scripture Union Warri, Nigeria. I recall my cousin Nadia spending her school vacations with the Nwokolo’s in Nigeria. My Mom and I were able to re-connect with Uncle Nwokolo and Aunt Uche in Kingwood Texas. 

Uncle Nwokolo actually took up the charge the Lord has for us in Romans 13- Fulfill the whole law by loving others with the love of Christ. 

Adieu Uncle Nwokolo, 2 Timothy 4 is now real to you - Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day. 

God will take care of Aunt Uche, your kids and grandkids. Adieu. 

Our brother Hubert, we remember the finest moments we’ve shared together and talked on the phone. Your voice and jokes we cannot mistake for anyone. Our memories of you is still quite clear as if we were together yesterday. It was like yesterday, you played an active part on our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Being a loving person you are, you gave up your busy schedule to be there for us. It breaks our heart to know, you are gone! 

Nevertheless, we thank God that you have gone to be with the Lord after a life of accomplishments. We have no doubt that you are in a better place and someday we will reunite again to part no more.

Grandpa Hubert was everything I wanted in a grandad. He was so kind, he was so smart and would always share his knowledge with you, he had such an amazing sense of humor and could lighten up any mood. He used to tell us stories all the time about his earlier days growing up and how he met Grandma Uche. 
Watching soccer with Grandpa was the ultimate fun because his reactions were so priceless when his team would concede a goal. We supported rival teams, he supported Manchester City and I was a Manchester United fan so anytime his team played I would always go with the other team which he started doing too when my team played and it made it more interesting.
 They say you can’t be a real man if you can’t take care of your family, well in that case Grandpa was the realest man out there. He was so family oriented, every Sunday Grandpa and Grandma Uche would have different family members over for a Sunday lunch which was always good vibes. The little things like helping him put the Christmas lights up around the house and going to Appplebees with him and my extended cousins are some of the things I miss the most.
 Every conversation we ever had, any advice you ever gave to me was always from a place of love. Grandpa Hubert, you will be missed, by your family and all the people you impacted along the way. God, I hope you protect Grandma Uche and every member of their family during this time. Grandpa, we miss you and love you, we take it lighter knowing that now you’re in a way better place than down here  and you’re watching over all of us.

Daddy, when I learned about your death I was filled with grief and sorrow because I know that one of God's generals, an icon, a legend, and peacemaker of our time has gone home. But we are comforted by the fact that you have gone to rest in the bosom of God. “Ogom” is what you called me because you wanted to play the role of a father figure in my life. You have fulfilled a vital role in my life as a father, mentor, encourager, and a strong financial supporter for Rescue Us. Daddy, you taught me to do business, God's way with full measure because you do not believe in giving God half measure. As the board chairman of Rescue Us, you taught us the importance of dedication and doing things God's way. Daddy we are going to miss you. My consolation is how you touched every life that crossed your path positively. Thank God you are resting in your mansion. I will miss you and I love you. Rest on Daddy till we meet to part no more, adieu!

Mazi Hubert Nwokolo was "Uncle Hubert" or "Grandpa Hubert" to me and my family, and it wasn't just in title alone. He played the role of uncle, father, grandfather and mentor to so many people he came across, and we were no exception. Uncle Hubert lived a very exemplary fulfilled life and served God with all his being. 

I have lost count of the number of school breaks and  holidays that my brothers and I spent in Kingwood, and Uncle Hubert was always there to welcome us at the airport or bus station with open arms. His generosity and hospitality towards us was overwhelming and it is something that we will cherish forever. 

I pray for God's healing and comfort for Grandma Uche and the rest of the family.

Thank you Jesus for keeping Grandpa Hubert in perfect peace because his mind is steadfast because he trusts in you.

A Tribute to Brother Hubert Okugo Nwokolo

It is with difficulty that I am trying to write a tribute to you, Brother Hubert.  When Catherine and I talked with you and Uche towards the end of October, I took note of your numbers because I meant to call again. We had reconnected after a few years’ break.  Sadly, further attempts to reach you were unsuccessful. I did not know that you were quite ill, and that our last conversation was really the last.
Brother Hubert, you were a fine Christian brother, a respectable and excellent gentleman, a leader, and a beloved manager of people wherever you interacted, whether at work or at home. 

Since the news of your passing on to the Lord broke, your tributes and eulogies took over the Arochukwu - and Amuvi-wide social media platforms for two and more days.
In my view, these praises were well deserved because since I met you during the war, I always saw you as a responsible brother of noble character and disposition. 
You were an outstanding petroleum engineering manager and an exceptional professional which was why you climbed the ladder to senior management in Shell. Congratulations on a meritorious and outstanding career.
You were a help and blessing to many. Testimonies abound in the Arochukwu social media from many people who thanked you for the various helps you gave them at different times. Indeed, you were a light that shone to the glory of God wherever you went.
We thank the Lord for your life and the praises you brought to His Name by the way you conducted yourself.  
Goodbye dear Brother until we meet in the Lord’s presence, “for we are confident that   neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. UgwuAro/Mazi Hubert was an epitome of love, joy, celebration and honor. I thank God for the privilege of knowing him. He brings the love of Christ to every situation and every body. I remember his visit with auntie in autumn of 2009 after I lost my mother he made me laugh so hard that the anguish was gone. He was so disciplined but displays it with so much joy and love that you will be forced to be compliant. Child of God you’re irreplaceable but heaven has gained a saint. Adieu loving/humble husband of auntie Uche, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and philanthropist. Almighty God give all of us the heart to bear and walk in the legacy uncle left.

Ogami, from the first day I met you, you filled a big vacuum in my life.  You became a father to me.  Thank you  for being the dad you didn't have to be.   You became my mentor and my moral compass.  You taught me to set my priorities right through the love of God and family.   You showed me what true greatness is through your interactions with people from all works of life by being humble, kind, peaceful, respectful,   compassionate, generous, loving and caring.  You were a man of integrity who stood for truth and justice.   You always saw the lighter and positive side of every situation.
    I will miss hearing your pet name for me - GRACE'M.  You always teased and cracked jokes which made me laugh and happy.  With you there were no airs.  You made everyone comfortable and fun to be with.  I will miss your words of wisdom, advice and great intelligent conversations. 
  Ogami I will forever miss you.  You will always have a place in my heart.  I love you daddy but God loves you most.  His will is supreme and we must obey.  Adieu Daddy.  Rest in His perfect peace until we meet again to part no more.

You were a fine gentleman, a symbol of peace and laughter. You gave your best to your children and served your community , the church of Jesus Christ and humanity at large with passion , empathy and grace. We will miss the warmth of your presence , the invaluable inspiration we all derive from your stores of wisdom. But we shall not mourn like people without hope because we know you have gone to take your rightful place in Heaven. Rest in perfect peace as you remain permanently resident in our HEARTS. Grorge Uduku.

“Daddy anyi” as I fondly called him was a man of the people, a real human being. What you see is what you get. A loving husband to my sister “Uchenwa”, a doting father to not only Ugo, Chichi, Chima and Uzo but to so many as well as a super loving granddaddy.  At a point, the biological kids thought that everyone in their house also was an “Nwokolo” because of the open house they had! Everyone was welcome and loved. The Nwokolos have been and still are our very close family friends. My daughter Onyinye and I were privileged to have had a video chat with him and Uche on the 10th of December from SA and he was his usual chatty humorous self full of life. Onyinye readily commended them for looking so young and healthy! So it came as a rude shock to hear that,not long after, Covid struck the family and he didn’t survive it! We are so grieved and saddened but God remains sovereign. My prayer is that God grants deep comfort to Uche and the entire family as well as to us all... and there goes God’s general, Mazi Hubert Okugo Nwokolo! Good night my loving big brother 💝... “Ugo gal”

I was fortunate to know Mr. Nwokolo when he helped me land my internship job in Washington DC. During the period I was in DC,  Mr. Nwokolo stood out as a man of honor. He also served as a mentor to me. Always willing to provide counsel on the right steps to take towards developing myself. His death came as a rude shock to my brothers and I.   We pray that the Almighty God grant him eternal rest and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss. 

Uncle, like we called him was an long time friend of my parents. My husband and I had the honor of having uncle Hubert chairman our wedding occasion . Uncle would not accept the position until he spent sometime counseling both of us . We can say that spending that quality time with him and leaning has been a source of  inspiration for us these 16 years . We ourselves have had opportunities to counsel other couples and uncle’s teaching always comes up. I remember uncle telling my hubby that “she is my daughter and you my junior (DMGS Alumni) watch out” . Uncle made sure we kept to time and refuse “African time” “ stating you have church in the morning so party has to finish on time 😂.”  Thank you uncle for the part you played in our marriage .


Mr. Nwokolo was a dear, dear friend of my family's for decades. I reconnected with him and his family when I moved to Houston a few years ago and it was like finding a second home. He was so incredibly kind, with a sly sense of humor, and I felt so welcomed whenever I stopped by. I was so incredibly torn to hear he had passed. I am still incredulous. He will be so sadly missed, but I am glad he lived such a good life and touched so many people for good. God bless.

Mazi Nwokolo is an exemplary Old Boy(a Dengramite) of DMGS Onitsha.   As Executive Director and Chief Fundraiser for DMGS Endowment Fund, itself a beneficiary of some of Mazi Nwokolo’s charitable acts, I hereby attest to Mazi Nwokolo’s generosity and love for DMGS(his alma mata).  Four months before his passing, Mazi Nwokolo contacted me in August 2020 to make arrangement to immediately satisfy his donation pledge to DMGS Endowment Fund.  He did so in record time.  We are saddened by the news of his unexpected loss.

DMGS Endowment Fund and DMGS Endowment Club mourn the loss of one of their generous benefactors.  We wish Mrs. Nwokolo (Uche) and her children God’s protection, and we pray for a peaceful repose of our fellow Dengramite, Mazi Hubert Okugo Nwokolo.   His benevolence will forever be remembered through his donations to DMGS Endowment Fund.

Uncle, I still can't believe i am writing a tribute on your passing this soon. Words cannot describe this difficult moment, but if this is the last time i have to say goodbye then i know that i will have to do so with the knowledge that i consider myself blessed to have been brought up by you and my auntie Uche. You were a lover of God and man. You touched many lives by your selfless and countless acts of kindness, always giving and never expecting any favors in return. The benefits of your hard work is a living testimony for so many young men and women you took under your wings at personal and professional level. Uncle , you will always be an inspiration to me. You have left a void that no one can fill.  You had a fulfilled life on earth. I thank God for your life and bid you farewell until we meet again. Yours only, Urssy mbo mbo.

Tribute to  An  Icon Late Hubert Okugo Nwokolo.                        
 Late Hubert Okugo Nwokolo was my eldest brother. He was very God fearing, humble, peaceful and straightforward. Hubert was a very loving brother. He took care of us his siblings after  we lost our parents in our teens. He managed our father's assets in Enugu to provide our school fees and upkeep allowances e.t.c until he completed his education in UK. On  return to Nigeria, he continued his care for us all, including our training in higher institutions, until we could stand on our own. The loss of Hubert is a monumental one. I have lost a father, brother and a close friend. I am praying  for God's healing  and  comfort and I know  He cares.

He was a perfect, God-fearing gentleman. Amuvi has lost a great son.  Our dear wife Uche and family, may  the Lord comfort you, and may our brother's soul rest in peace. Amen.
