As a young girl, she grew up in the small town of Pampa, Texas with her mother, Mabel Teague and her brother Clarence, sisters Betty and Carolyn. She moved to the big city of Houston Texas in 1958, where she enrolled in Cosmetology school. It was there she learned that she loved doing hair and everything about the beauty business.
She also met the love of her life, Joe Dodson during his brief tenure at the cosmetology school. They married and had two children, Carol and Greg, and built a life in Sharpstown in the 60’s where she became a stay at home mom, room mother, girl scout leader, baseball team mom and immersed herself in the lives and activities of her children. She never stopped doing hair and operated an in home salon for many years for friends and family. This led her to later become an owner of beauty salons in Quail Valley and Stafford.
Her career path changed when she started working as a sales rep for the local Redken distributor in Houston. She really loved calling on salons and getting to know new people in the beauty industry. She and her husband Joe had the opportunity to purchase RDA Promart, Houston in 1997 and operated it together for many years. Jan later opened a second store, RDA Promart, Northwest Houston to expand her reach of customers.
Jan became a true icon in the beauty business. She has been recognized as a Prestige level store owner for many years within the State Beauty Supply Network. She surrounded herself with the best team in the industry, and was extremely proud of all of her employees and the success they had together. Retirement was never in her vocabulary and she enjoyed working every day as long as her health allowed. The true joy of her life, were her three granddaughters, Jessica, Jenna and Emily. She was” Mimi” to them and rarely missed a school program, football game or Grandparents Day.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Joe Dodson in 2004 and her son, Joseph Gregory “Greg” Dodson in 2008. She was the matriarch of her family and “Aunt Jan” to so many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews .For many years she loved to host Christmas Eve festivities at her house for the family. She loved all of them and there are too many names to list them all…
There were so many important people in her life over the years, and as she became ill many friends visited with her and filled her last days with love. She was eternally grateful for the kindness of her many loyal customers, caregivers and doctors. We will always remember the little lady with the bright red hair, also known as Mom, Mimi and Aunt Jan who always had a pot of coffee on and always had time to sit and chat.
