Jane was the loving daughter of Thomas (Tommy) and Jullean (Judy) Countryman. Her early education took place at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in the Montrose neighborhood. In 1957, her family moved to the “country” in Bunker Hill Village where her parents built a home next door to her maternal grandparents. There Jane enjoyed a relaxed upbringing with her siblings and friends, exploring the outdoors and riding horses through, among other places, the future site of Memorial City Mall (referred to as “the 40 Acres”)
Her academic journey continued at Spring Branch Junior High and Spring Branch High School, culminating in her graduation from Memorial High School’s first graduating class in 1963. Following high school, Jane attended the University of Houston for a year, during which she pursued a major in art.
Throughout her life, Jane held various administrative roles, ultimately retiring from the Spring Branch School District. However, her professional life was just one aspect of her many talents and passions. Jane was a gifted seamstress from a young age, beginning at eight years old when she sewed dresses for her dolls. This skill evolved as she sewed for herself and others throughout high school and beyond.
Jane's creative talents extended to the fine arts, interior design, floral design, upholstery, and drapery. She particularly cherished her time spent porcelain painting with her mother and sister, an activity she enjoyed with friends from the Houston Porcelain Arts Club. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish a wallpaper installation company and a floral decoration business. She was capable of anything she put her mind to and applied her meticulous and exacting nature to ensure perfection in every project.
Family and friends were paramount to Jane. She was known for her selflessness, always putting others ahead of herself and staying curious about the lives of those around her. Jane maintained lifelong friendships, including those formed in junior high, which she cherished throughout her life.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents, her infant daughter Kimberly Meredith Townsend, her brother Thomas (Tommy) Countryman Jr., and her nephew Jason Countryman. She is survived by her loving son, Lee Townsend; her sister Martha Van Winkle and husband Dan; her sister-in-law Pat Countryman; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Jane Camille Eschmann will be remembered for her dedication to family and friends, her artistic talents, and her unwavering pursuit of perfection in all her endeavors. Her selfless spirit and genuine care for others will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Her family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Gentiva Hospice, especially nurses Vera Tony and Patrick Tukulo and Chaplain Charlie Flanagan. Finally, they are especially grateful for the care and friendship of her caretaker Pauline Andres who was like a member of the family.
