Janet was born on July 10, 1936, in Texas City, Texas to the late Benjamin and Sadie Hohlt. She grew up in many towns around the Texas Gulf Coast until they settled in Bellville, Texas where she and her 2 sisters, at the time, were known as the “Hohlt Girls”. She graduated from Bellville High School in 1954 where she was the drum major of the school band. In 1956, she met the love of her life, Joe, while working in a jewelry store in downtown Houston and they were married on January 24, 1958. They shared 41 beautiful years together, until Joe’s passing on August 15, 1999. Together, they were a tremendous example of love and strength of character and held tremendous devotion and responsibility to their entire family.
Janet worked as a secretary after their wedding until their son, Christopher, was born in 1966. Eventually, Joe would start his own drafting and architectural design company, where she worked with him doing all the secretarial work for the business, but her primary devotion was always raising their son. She maintained her strong faith in the Lord, and she was a founding member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in the Spring Branch area of Houston.
Janet is survived by her son Christopher, her daughter-in-law Wendy and the person who brought her the greatest joy, her granddaughter Brittany and her husband Somtoo Ike. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Koehn and Judith Marshall, and many very close nieces and nephews. She was a favorite Aunt Jan or “Net” to so many and even to some that were not related. Janet was preceded in death by her husband; Joe, parents; Ben and Sadie Hohlt and sister: Janie Mewis.
She leaves many close friends and other family members who will miss her genuine smile, gentle disposition and sharp wit. She was a great advocate to all her family and always seemed to be the one who was called for advice and to be the peacemaker.
Visitation will be held from 10am to the 12pm funeral hour on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in West Houston. There will be a graveside service following the funeral and then a reception on site until 3:30pm.
