Jean grew up in New Orleans, attending St. Francis Xavier elementary school and Holy Name High School, where she was active in many sports, especially volleyball. She went on to Louisiana State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, and graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans with a BS degree in journalism.
Jean married her husband John K. Dubiel in 1959. During over 50 years of marriage, Jean and John raised four children, traveled all over the world, and lived in many wonderful places. Jean especially loved their time in Rye, New York, London, England, and Dubai, UAE.
Jean had a great sense of humor and adventure, a carefree spirit, and made every family gathering festive and fun. Her active interest in everyone she met ensured that she was never a stranger anywhere. She enjoyed tennis, trips to the mountains and the beach, reading the news, researching everything, dogs, and children. “Mamere” especially loved being a mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Her children were her proudest achievement in life. Those children are forever grateful for all of the time, love and support she gave to them and her grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her husband John, her children Karey Dye (and husband Phillip), Kris Maclay (and husband John), Katherine Murchison (and husband J.D.), and John Dubiel, Jr. (and wife Randi), her grandchildren Elizabeth and Margaret Dye, Mary Martha and Megan Maclay, Sarah and William Murchison, and Matthew and Carter Dubiel. She is also survived by her brother, Lars Steib of Metairie, Louisiana, her beloved twin sister and lifelong best friend, Joan Poerschke of Brenham, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank: Dr. George Carrum, Audrey Scholoff, and Denyse Pickens of Methodist Hospital for the compassionate care they gave Jean for many years; the dedicated caregivers at the Plaza at the Buckingham and Houston Hospice who took care of Jean with loving kindness and good humor in her final months, especially Fasia Freeman; and Becky Banos, who visited Jean daily to pray with her and give her Holy Eucharist.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, April 24 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc, Houston.
For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart 10202 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024, Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77030, or the charity of your choice.
