She was born to William and Ruby Grice on August 8, 1933, in Mayhill, New Mexico. She was the youngest of six children and an unexpected surprise to her parents.
Throughout her entire life, Jean held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. Jean was a faithful member of the Jersey Village Church of Christ in Houston, Texas, for more than 45 years. She taught two generations of toddler Bible classes, attended Bible teacher workshops, assisted with many weddings, baby and graduation events, and designed flower arrangements for the church.
Jean retired from Esso Exploration (Exxon) in 1986, followed by a short stint in the party rental and catering business. Afterward, she worked on a part time basis as a receptionist for counselor Beth Wade at Memorial Church of Christ and later as an assistant to Nancy Travis of Decorating Den; Pagitt's Insurance Agency; Middlebrook and Addison Insurance; and Mary Kay Cosmetics.
Always a thoughtful and compassionate lady, her soft and meek spirit was a comfort to be around. She had a way of viewing the world as the glass half full, the cloud with a silver lining, and an open parking spot at just the right moment. A wonderful mother and grandmother, she always baked the celebratory confections for birthdays and special occasions. She was always there to help family and friends, be a shoulder to cry on, and quietly listen when needed.
Some of her favorite things included all shades of purple, a hot cup of coffee, a good book, music, classic movies, playing games such as bunco, 42, canasta, and travelling abroad. She had a vast teacup collection, made of all types of materials, sizes and shapes, in addition to a wide variety of crystal and glass swans.
She is survived by her daughter, Toni Harmon; and two sons, Stephen Harmon, and Kyle "Russ" Harmon and wife Lisa; two grandchildren, Rachel Harmon Robles and husband Robbie, and Kyle Harmon, II and wife Judith; and one great-granddaughter, Miranda Robles.
The family wishes to express sincerest appreciation to Hospice+ and all the caregivers for their kind and loving care of Jean over the last few years. Your gentle care helped the journey to her end of life easier to bear. And to Jean’s beloved caretaker, Malrie – you were an angel sent from above at the moment you were needed. Thank you for loving and caring for Jean like no one else could do.
Though we are saddened by her leaving, we are comforted to know that she is in the arms of our Lord.
