Early Saturday morning, July 11th, fellow believer, Jo Anne Buckner was called home. Our Lord welcomed her at 3:45am with loved ones who preceded her in death. She was once again embraced by her loving husband, Spencer Paul Buckner, as well as her Father and Mother, Raymond and Winnie Bowen and three brothers and three sisters. All were reunited amongst a cloud of many witnesses and were soon seated at a heavenly table.
Those who mourn the passing are her friends as well as family. Her two daughters Terri Seith and Laurie Denning,
Sons-in-law Michael Seith and Phillip Denning, and grandchildren Spencer Denning, Emma Denning and Rachel Seith.
Her friends were those she knew through her church, Houston’s First Baptist, where for many years she taught an adult lady Sunday school class, as well through her volunteer work at Westview Mission, where she shared her testimony with countless folks as they came into the food pantry. She also played the game of 42, regularly, at church and in a monthly club. The ladies with which she ate lunch, on Sundays, will miss her jovial spirit. We will miss her until we meet again.
Jo Anne arrived in Hopkins County, Texas, on December 5th, 1931, one of five daughters born to Winnie and Raymond Bowen. She met her future spouse, Spencer Paul Buckner, after moving to Baytown to attend Lee Business School. They married on March 11th, 1951, later moving to Houston due to job opportunities. She remained Spence’s loving wife until his passing in 1994. She worked as a secretary at DuPont until her daughter Terri arrived. Later in life, she went back to secretarial work, using her skills in church offices for three different Baptist congregations, the last being Springwoods Baptist on Houston’s Northwest side. She lived in the same home, in Northwest Houston, most of her 83 years, just moving to Parkway Community for her last few weeks.
Opting out of any aggressive treatment, Jo Anne was prepared for her journey. At the end our Lord was gracious, taking her quickly. And although there was some pain involved in her leaving, God ended her suffering swiftly and welcomed her into His keeping. To this we say, “Praise the Lord, this world is not our home, we’re only passing through.”
