Joan McAllister Hendricks, known as “Joanne” to her family and friends, passed away on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023, at the age of ninety-one. Joan was born on August 4, 1932, to Sam Alva and Eunice Davis McAllister at their home in Perryville, Texas. She grew up in Perryville until the family moved to Houston when she was ten. They lived east of downtown, and she graduated from Sam Houston High School.
Joan married James Hendricks on December 23, 1948, and they had two daughters, Cynthia and Cheryl. After the girls were school age, Joan went to work as a secretary for HISD. She then joined the staff of Houston Community College, and enjoyed a fulfilling career in the college president’s office until her retirement in 1994. She achieved her Associates Degree, and developed many of her dearest lifelong friendships while working for HCC. Joan enjoyed retirement for a little while, then went back to work part-time at Heyden Stanley Group for over ten years. After her “second retirement,” she spent her time socializing with dear friends and family, both in Houston and at her home-place in East Texas. Keeping up with her extended family members was a source of delight and deep love she treasured.
Joan has been a member at Candlelight Church of Christ since 1985. The love and support of her church family at Candlelight was a source of great joy and strength to Joan. She considered “Gov” Clements, their minister, one of her best friends. She strove to serve others according to her faith, and was gratefully the recipient of tremendous love and faithful service from the church family in her later years.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Gill, grandchildren, Jameson Schreiber and Sarah Medearis (and husband Scott), and other treasured cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim of 62 years, and her daughter Cynthia. Many treasured aunts, uncles, and cousins were also awaiting her arrival once she left us.
If you would like to make a donation in lieu of sending flowers, Joan’s favorite charity was the Lifeline Chaplaincy. A donation in her name would honor her beautifully and help many in need.
