John Ping Kwok Chang, age 74 of Houston, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. John was born on September 10, 1951 in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He immigrated to the US when he was 19 years old and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and the University of Houston. He was a restauranteur since 1981, pioneering the sushi scene, including Miyako and El Pacifico, and became a Houston institution.
He was an authoritative, but fair and big-hearted boss to all his employees. John was committed to high standards in quality, especially to customer service.
John was a loving husband, survived by his wife Rebecca Chang. He was the life of the party. He loved hanging out with his doggies Chucky, Cowboy, Charlie, and Coby. He enjoyed playing golf, was a big sports fan, singing karaoke and telling naughty jokes. John was a wise listener, a considerate and generous soul.
John Chang was well respected and loved by people around him.
