Every interaction with my uncle Jorge was fun and loving. He’d slap me and laugh or tell me to “shhhhhhhiaaaut uuuuup” before I even said anything, which was always funny and humbling; its probably why i do it now to my son now.  It was hard to tell when I was experiencing it but watching him perform his fatherly duties was exceptionally impactful to my own style of parenting. Knowing now that a single father has a tough set of responsibilities, Jorge never seemed damaged by it. He never seemed frustrated or upset or tired.  I’m pretty sure Georgie and I were infuriating to have to deal with, if you can picture Virgil and Turk Malloy from the Ocean 11 movies,  was pretty much how we were together on a regular basis. He would yell at us, but it would only last for a few seconds as he couldn’t muster up the ability to stay mad. For Georgie and I to be able to act as dumb as we wanted and be loud and annoying, means that we always knew we were in a safe place, both physically but also emotionally Jorge was always a safe harbor. The best days were when I was able to sleep over their apartment in Long Beach. We’d go to the drive-in, which to this day are the only times I’ve ever been to a drive-in, or he’d always take us to the Moon Palace for egg battered steak and rice or he’d make us dinner and my favorite was rice with egg and sliced hotdog. Jorge was a super cool guy. He had a badass mustache, drove a mustang, and was always dressed well. He also had a really cool thunderbird with police scanner at one point. He was my cool uncle from New York. I instantly felt I had some kind of street credit because I had a taxi-driving, military vet of an uncle who has been shot and lived to talk about it. Since he passed, I've been slowly putting together in my head all of the different events and examples I experienced with my uncle Jorge  and I am forever grateful to the universe for placing him and Georgie in my life.  I’ll never forget him. 

Yoyo was a stranger to me, when he first approached our front door. I still recall how professional and well groomed he appeared; rarely did I see him not wearing a suit. As a single parent, his priority was Georgie, whom he dearly loved. Like mom, he wanted nothing more than to raise his son as a thoughtful caring individual. With his frequent visits, Yoyo and mom developed a strong bond, sharing parenting responsibilities, and he became the “uncle” to fill the male void left by the passing of our dad. Georgie spent much time in our home; so much so, that we considered him a sibling. Yoyo loved family gatherings; frequently serving as my dance parter. He loved his Ecuadorian culture, especially the cuisine, but embraced American citizenship with pride. Yoyo was a gentle soul with a big heart. When mom and Yoyo attained “empty nester” status, they found one another to be excellent dining and shopping partners. Yoyo was such an inspiration to the family, that upon reflection, I regret not having spent more time with him when the opportunity was there. Now that he has moved on, we will remember him fondly as he walks with angels. Our prayers are with him now as well as Georgie & Tiffany.

You are more than a father-in-law to me! You are a supporter,  a jokester, a shopping partner, but most of all you are my family. 21 years went by so fast but the memories are forever. I will forever hold a special place in my heart for you! Until we meet again! I love you Dad!! I'll take care of our boy. I promise!
