As I move through the stages of grief, I realize more & more what an enormous loss this is to me & so many others.  Joe  occasionally came to my home. This one time he & Charmaine stayed in my guest room when my fur babies were still little kids.  They loved him of course, & this picture makes me smile.
Ricky (the name Dad called my pup, but not her given name) is no longer with us, perhaps she is with Joe & Dad jumping on Joe once again, while Dad whips her up a pan fried burger.  Modum (Joe’s nickname, not his given name) for my now nearly 19 year old Bengal  kitten) decided to jump in on the fun.  Joe had his way with the cats too, even trained his cat to say “out” when wanting outside.
What a super talented guy!  I thank God for giving me life around 18 months after Joe’s birth.

Be blessed Joe & we’ll meet up again when it’s my turn.
Until then I’ll do your memory justice & hold all my memories of you close to my heart forever.

In the short time we knew Joe, he continually blessed our family with the greatest gift. That gift being knowledge. Even in his last days, Joe would spend hours sharing about the knowledge of windmills and surviving in the country. Looking back, Joe was sort of like a windmill, he represented toughness and he brought his best when tested in my life. From the day we met him, his candle always shined bright and even after he’s gone his light still remains. Joe, We wish you farewell in your journey to heaven. May the wind be at your back, my friend. We shall see you soon.

Charmaine and Smock Family I am so very sorry for your loss. I am grateful to have known Joe for almost 10 years since I started working at the shop. He was always there to give me a hand if I needed help. I have so many good and crazy memories with him that I’ll never forget. He will be missed very much. 



I am so grateful to have known you, Joe. You have always seemed so familiar to me, like you were straight out of my family. There are very few people I have met that could ever be as genuine as you. It was clear that you never said something you didn't mean and you never made a promise you didn't intend to keep. I appreciate all the things you always did for us. You even called and checked on me more than my own dad when I was ever sick. You had irreplaceable wisdom we will never get back. I see so much of you in my husband sometimes it makes me laugh but I'm glad it's you and not someone else who has influenced him so much. I will take care of your family as I know you would with mine. God bless you,  Joe. I wish I could squeeze you one more time. Love you and thank you for being such a great person to me. We miss you and all of your stories already!

Sitting on the front porch at the cabin, Joe pulled out his box of knives to show the boys. Oh they were so excited and thrilled he was sharing stories talking about cool stuff younge boys like.
He was always so great and good with any young enthusiastic lad who was eager to learn. He was with me, and I saw the same way he was with the boys.

Dear Smock family, 
Anyone who know Joe would love him. All of you played a role in my teenage years!!! You all welcomed me into Pech Road, and I always felt like part of the family.  
Joe always made me smile and I was intrigued by the way he seemed so relaxed about life and the troubles in it. I loved his loyalty to the family and how he cared for your dad and mom. I don’t know what I would have done without being an adopted part of your family.  
I promise to pray for you as you grieve.  A loss like this one is hard, but I look forward to spending time with Joe again when I get to Heaven.  God be with each of you🙏💕.

My beloved brother Joe passed away in Round Rock Texas at the young age of 66. As his older brother, I cherish the many years we spent together. We grew up on the Spring Branch farm together and we learned together to work the land and provide for our families.

We worked hard together growing up but we also learned about life together. We hunted and fished together, we learned how to mount wild animals, we learned the art of tanning hides and making leather together. As adults, we raised hogs together, smoked bacon and ham and made sausage together.

Joe was not too fond of book learning but he was as smart and talented as they come and had a natural mechanical ability like no one else I've ever known. At 12 years old, with absolutely no training as a mechanic, he would regularly fix all things mechanical and he often fixed the beat up old Dodge pickup that I drove to high school. I could only scratch my head in wonder as he explained the workings of a modern gasoline combustion engine to me.

Joe dropped out of school and went to work in the body shop at the local Ford dealership before he turned 16 years old. While his contemporaries were still in high school and trying to decide what to do with their lives, Joe had already earned the reputation as one of the best body men around.

Not only smart and talented, Joe was simply a good person. He was always willing to help out anyone that needed help, especially his large extended family.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all of the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Joe was a great neighbor.  My wife and I would sometimes chat with him and Charmaine for an hour or so, standing along our shared fence.  He had many great, interesting stories that he shared about his family, friends, and the neighborhood.  He kindly warned us of predators in the area so we could protect our animals.  And we enjoyed talking with tender-hearted Charmaine.  He was certainly a dog whisperer, and it was clear that he loved his dogs.  He left us all too soon.  We send our condolences to Charmaine and to his family.

As many experienced, Joe was a huge part of my life. In fact, he was like a father to me. I remember so many years of him teaching me how to work with my hands, how to take something that many would see as unfixable and bring it back to life. The man had a gift, a talent rarely seen these days, all I can say is I'll hold on to my memories and pray (as Charmaine always told me to)  I retained a small fraction of his knowledge. I remember sitting many nights on the front porch of the cabin hearing and telling stories, some of which made you laugh and some just made me shake my head, but all great and all told a story of a man who lived his life to its fullest.
There are so many things to say, and honestly at this point I'm at a loss of words. All I feel is a deep loss for someone who was so important.

A metaphor for the life he lived, surrounded by a loyal posse of friends.  He would do anything for them and vice versa. 
It was at one of his friend’s funerals that I realized how rich Joe was. Friends had dropped everything to ride/drive across country to attend. It was a beautiful testament of loyalty, honor and love. 
Joe taught me that it is not what you have, but who you have. It is where your loyalties lie that matter.  He fulfilled my father’s dying wish to take care of our mother….an extended ordeal that surely expedited his own demise. Joe built up credits in Heaven, leaving a grieving widow in the process. 
Rest in Peace, my childhood partner in crime. I will miss you until the end of time. 


When you called me in March, a few months ago, I didn’t think we could beat our previous 18 hour phone conversation, but as I started dozing off, you insisted that we beat our previous record.  I agreed & got up & made me some coffee.  We made it 20 hours -sharing thoughts, feelings, stories of our lives, our loves, our shared knowledge & all those things you always taught me when we communicated.  I will miss you every remaining day if my life.
