A native Houstonian, Kenneth grew up in the Heights where he graduated from Reagan High School, Class of ’55. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After attending the University of Houston, he entered the business world in sales for Burroughs Corporation. Then, true to his entrepreneurial spirit, and following in his father’s footsteps in the well screen business, Kenneth owned and operated Western Well Screen Company, WESCO for many years. Later, he was the President and CEO of Williams Mettle Wesco Industries, Inc. and President of the Texas Ground Water Association.
During his 83 years on earth, Kenneth lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling, investing in start up businesses, collecting artwork and classic cars, cherished his prized ’57 Thunderbird, and supported numerous nonprofit organizations. A participant in the annual Harold Wiesenthal Bad Pants Golf Tournament for Texas Children’s Hospital, Kenneth also loved golf and was proud of his hole-in-one at Memorial Park. Kenneth also worked on George H. W. Bush’s first campaign for Senate in Texas. He loved Hershey’s Kisses, Charlene’s sugar cookies and a good joke.
Kenneth was blessed to be a part of the large extended Westmoreland family. He was instrumental in organizing many large family reunions and had a great appreciation for family. His Sunday afternoon routine included sitting on his back porch and calling every one of his many cousins and friends to stay in contact and catch up on life events. Kenneth had a huge heart and always wanted to make sure everyone was okay. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for his family, employees, brothers in Christ and his beloved beagle, Lola.
Kenneth loved the Lord and was a proud Christian. He was a member of The Baptist Temple and a Deacon for many years. Anyone wishing to send a remembrance may contribute in his memory to The Baptist Temple, 230 West 20th Street Houston, Texas 77008 or Houston Beagle Rescue.
Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents, Keron and Fred Howard and brother, Larry. Kenneth is survived by Joyce, his loving wife of 62 years; his children Karen and Russell; nephews Kevin (Kristi), Michael (Leslie) and Matthew; sister-in-law, Cathy; and by numerous cousins, family and friends.
Entombment will be at Forest Park Cemetery Westheimer for immediate family with a memorial service to follow at a later date.
