Our beloved sister, aunt, friend, and servant of God, Laura Ann Walker, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2021, just shy of her 73rd birthday. Laura was born to Willie Don and Charles Douglas Walker on January 16, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas. She was a compassionate soul whose passions were teaching and caring for others.
After graduating from Phillis Wheatly High School in 1966 and attending St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Laura moved to Houston, Texas, to continue her education at Texas Southern University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in education (supervision). She was a beloved teacher and mentor. Laura began her career with the Houston Independent School District and retired from the Aldine Independent School District after 42 years of service. Laura loved and cared for her children; she never wanted to miss a day of school because of them. Her true joy in life was helping children discover a passion for learning. She poured herself into the girls in her girl clubs. She was a member of the Texas Educators Association.
Laura loved to love on people, and it suited her servant’s heart. She dedicated her life to God at an early age, and was baptized at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend W. G. Gillespie, Sr. In Houston, she united with and was a devoted member of “The Church Without Walls” Brookhollow Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ralph Douglas West.
She loved spending time with family and friends, annual gatherings with her beloved Ya-Ya sisters, shopping, traveling, playing the slots, and just loving on the people she cared about the most. People who knew her were touched by her smile, selflessness, and blessings. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts for her grace, acts of kindness, preparedness (travel essentials: goodie bags, snack coolers, and hand sanitizers before it was fashionable), and laughter.
Laura was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; sisters, JoAnn Pearson, and Charlene Walker; her only brother, Arthur Perkins Walker; brother-in-law, Douglas Lott; aunt, Olivia Brown; uncle, Arthur Perkins; nephews, David Smith, and Freddie Brunce; niece, Jermaine McKinnise; godparents; and goddaughter, Stephanie McLaurin.
