Lawrence Edward Newton, Jr. passed away on Wednesday February 18, 2016 at the age of 83 in Houston, Texas. He was born and raised in Houston, went to Stephen F. Austin High School and graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was an early pioneer in the computer field – starting with IBM mainframes in the early 1960’s and moving on to VAX computers and others as a longtime VMS expert. He spent 35 years working in computer programming at M.D. Anderson Hospital, then 10 additional years at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He loved working on computers so much that he kept working until age 75. One of his favorite hobbies was working crossword puzzles - often completing two per day for many years.
Lawrence is survived by his wife Cuc, three children, Lisa Russell and husband Russ Russell, Steven Newton, and Donna Newton, as well as his extended family of Loc and Doan Pham, John Pham, and Duke and Ron Ferrero-Pham. He is also survived by his amazing grandkids – Kyra Alvarado, Alanna Alvarado, Camryn Pham, Carder Pham, Colin Pham, Preston Pham, and Avery Pham. Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Newton.
For the last 15 years, Lawrence and his wife Cuc had amazing adventures and travelled widely – taking their kids and grandkids on thrilling trips to destinations like Hawaii, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, California, Oregon, Vermont, Las Vegas and more. We are thankful for all the fun and full times we spent together.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital and in particular Dr. Zhang, Dr. Takashima, Dr. Suku, Kevin, and Alfonso.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 3:00 pm in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024.
