The warm Texas night pulses to the sharp, joyful squeeze of an accordion and the driving, metallic scrape of a washboard. The rich, peppery aroma of homemade gumbo hangs in the heavy air, pulling friends and family together onto a crowded wooden dance floor.
This vibrant scene—a pure celebration of heritage, deep community roots, and soulful music—is the very essence of Zydeco. For Lillie Ann Gobert, it wasn’t just a cherished pastime; it was the rhythm by which she lived. With grace, resilience, and an ever-present warmth, Lillie danced beautifully through the many diverse chapters of her extraordinary life.
Born on September 30, 1943, in Liberty, Texas, to Frank and Elmira Gobert, Lillie’s spirit was always attuned to a joyful melody. As the youngest child in the family, Lillie naturally fell into the role of helper, dedicating much of her youth to caring for her older siblings
and aging parents.
This early experience of nurturing those she loved sparked a deep, lifelong passion for caregiving and became the ultimate catalyst for her choosing a profession in nursing.
After graduating from Woodson High School, Lillie two-stepped her way to Houston, Texas. She obtained her nursing degree and poured her compassionate heart into several nursing homes in the Houston area. Over a dedicated 25-year career, she rose to the
esteemed role of Assistant Director of Nurses.
Lillie’s adventurous spirit led her to completely change the tempo after retiring from nursing.
She relocated to Eagle Pass, Texas, boldly purchased a shrimp boat, and set out to sea. For nearly five years, she took on the demanding but thrilling work of a fisherwoman. When the rhythm of the ocean had run its course, Lillie returned to Houston. In her free
time, she could be found moving to the live Zydeco beats at Jax Grill in Houston, soaking in the music she so deeply adored. Her hands—whether they had been caring for patients or hauling in nets—were also the delicate hands of an artist. Lillie crafted beautiful clay sculptures and cultivated breathtaking life in her gardens. She loved traveling the world and cherished the joyful moments spent with her dear friend Helen Jones and daughter-like confidants, Marilyn Adams and Brenda Connant.
Lillie’s faith was the steady, unwavering bassline of her life. She was a monumental pillar of St. Monica Catholic Church. Selflessly sharing her time and talents, she served on the Building and Grounds Committee, the Directory Committee, the Altar Society, the
Samaritan Ministry, the Hospitality Ministry, the Rosary Makers, as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
The song of Lillie’s life was most deeply enriched by the family she cherished. Though she now joins the heavenly choir and is preceded in death by her beloved son Edward Plumbar Jr., her parents Frank and Elmira Gobert, and her siblings Thelma Gobert
Haynes, Sanora Durisseau, Mary Lee Bell, Vita LaCour, Nita Powell, Leitha Theirry, Hester Gobert, Whitney Gobert, Paul Gobert, and Harry Gobert Samuel, her melody carries on.
She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, survived by her two devoted daughters, Danille Rosemond and Valencia Dotson (and her husband, Earl). Her vibrant rhythm will continue to beat in the hearts of her grandchildren: James Rosemond Jr. (Autumn),
Valecia Plumbar, Jalisa Rosemond, Jamel Rosemond, Victoria Jones, and Va’nea Jones; as well as her precious great-grandchildren: Reese, Chelsea, Preston, and Journee Rosemond.
Lillie Ann Gobert lived a life full of flavor, faith, and fierce love. As the final notes of her earthly song fade, we know she is somewhere beautiful, dancing to a heavenly accordion, forever wrapped in the music she loved.
