Lou Genia Mills passed away October 20, 2020 at the age of 78. She is survived by her daughters: Sharisse Tompkins and Deidra Rosenbaum & husband Charles, brother Richard Bowley & wife Bettie, sister Roberta Castille & husband James, grandchildren: Brianna Oberle & husband David, Quinton Tompkins & wife Layla, and Garrick Tompkins, and her great-grandson: Rupert Oberle. She was a loving woman that will be remembered as a smart, hardworking, adventurer.
Lou Genia began her great adventure with Alfred when she was 16. She was eager to enter the world and make her mark. She wasn't scared of being alone while her husband was in the Army stationed overseas. When he returned home they would often travel; they loved camping. They never got lost. The few times someone tried to tell them they were, Lou Genia would reply that they were just wandering.
Lou Genia was not afraid of hard work. She helped build her parent's house. And, despite saying she would never build another house again she married an artist who loved building houses. Her final home was a labor of love. Every surface painted and textured, every plant placed and nurtured, every brick and stone laid by her loving hands.
Everyone that met Lou Genia will tell you of her loving nature. She loved her children, her children's children, her sister's children, and their children. She loved all her family's pets as well as most of the neighbors'. She would cry while watching the news when her love for a stranger would overcome her. Everytime a grandchild was born she would take all of her leave and spend the first few weeks or months with them. She was known for her incredibly thoughtful gifts that were inspired by her genuine love of the recipient.
Her final gifts to her family were thanks to her brilliance. She was a smart woman that could slip seamlessly into the job market when she needed to help support her family. If you needed to identify a plant she could use her encyclopedias and have a name within minutes. She could check your homework as well as check your lease agreement. And, she somehow knew exactly what her family would need in order to care for her as her illness progressed.
Her family will forever be thankful and proud of the wonderful, fierce, woman that we had the privilege of loving.
