Lucille “Big Mama” Scott, 92, of Houston, Texas, entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 4, 2025.
Born on April 15, 1933, Lucille was a woman of strength, grace, faith, and limitless love. Raised in the historic Acres Homes community, she later built a beautiful life and home in Independence Heights—both places that shaped her into the cornerstone of her family. She attended school in Fifth Ward, where she proudly received her diploma from Phillis Wheatley High School, a milestone that reflected her determination and commitment to excellence.
Lucille devoted her life to her family, uplifting those around her with warmth, wisdom, and the steady presence that earned her the cherished nickname “Big Mama.” Her home was a place of refuge, laughter, and unconditional acceptance. She was not only a grandmother in name, but in purpose—her first grandchild lovingly declared her “Big Mama,” a title that remained a badge of honor throughout her life.
Lucille leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion, resilience, and the enduring bonds she nurtured throughout her lifetime. She touched countless lives with her generous spirit and her gift for making everyone feel seen, loved, and welcomed.
She is survived by her two sons, Eddie Scott Jr. and Edward Scott; five daughters, Julia Scott, Mamie Scott, Kathy Scott, Carol Denton (Nathan), and Gloria Scott; two brothers, Columbus Baines Jr. (Rosetta) and Nick Baines; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends—each carrying forward the lessons and love she poured into them.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Scott Sr.; her father, Columbus Baines Sr., and mother, Mamie (Watson) Baines; two sons, Joseph Scott and Columbus Scott; two brothers and five sisters; and many dear family members and friends who now rejoice in her heavenly homecoming.
Her memory will forever remain a blessing and a source of
strength.
