January 19, 1947 in Hayward, California. His parents relocated to Texas where he grew up mostly in San Antonio. Growing up, he took his role very seriously as the oldest brother to Maxie Cervera, Max Cervera, the late Dora (Cervera) Middendorf, Michael Cervera, Araceli (Cervera) Feeney and Maxine
(Cervera) Osborn. He attended Thomas Edison High School and was introduced to his life partner, Esther, at the age of 17 by mutual friends. Mack enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country proudly but was released on a medical discharge due to a childhood hearing condition.
Mack and Esther married in 1966 and 3 years later had a daughter, Cynthia. The young family bravely left their hometown and both of their families to move to Houston to begin a new life. They settled in a new development called Spring Branch. Within a couple of years’, they added a son, David, to complete their family. Mack worked hard to be able to provide completely for his family, sometimes working two jobs. However, he always found time for the fun things in life. Some of his passions when he was younger was coaching his children’s sports teams, playing golf, dancing and hanging with friends. The golf team that he was part of often took Mack and his family around the state for new adventures making lots of memories.
As he grew older and traveled along the road of his life, he discovered Jesus. In 1986, Mack and Esther were baptized together in the Christian faith – accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior. Life got even more exciting as he wholeheartedly embraced his new season of life. Mack immersed himself first at Lakewood Church where he was a very involved prayer partner studying under John and Dodie Osteen. Mack and Esther also attended Believers World Outreach Church and are current participating members of West Houston Christian Center pastored by the Pidgeon family. Along the last 34 years, Mack was involved in many different ministries such as prayer partners, prison, hospital, men’s groups, married couples, and several other service groups. One of his most cherished times of his life was anytime that he was able to ride his prized motorcycle with the ministry organization, the Chariots of Light. He loved flying down the open road while enjoying the company of other believers.
Mack was an animated and passionate man about subjects that filled his heart. He never met a stranger and loved to talk with anyone to share his Jesus. He recently rediscovered his American patriotism and loved this great country. Mack also totally enjoyed target practice with his myriad of guns and collecting his little metal cars all while entering his new adventure called retirement.
Mack is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Esther (Zapata) Cervera who was his forever ‘Queen’. He took great pride in his two children. He often told them how proud he was of their families. He leaves behind his ‘Daughter Dearest’ Cynthia (Cyndi) Whitten and husband Don of Jersey Village and his ‘Son’ David Cervera and wife Kristi of Houston. His 7 grandchildren were blessed to have the best ever Papol. Mack had very close relationships with all along with their chosen partners. He often talked about how honored he was to be a physical witness to their amazing life experiences.
Papol’s blessings along with their chosen partners are: Donyelle Whitten and Matthew Towne of San Antonio; Kaitlyn Whitten McNeil and Rex McNeil of Jersey Village; Bradley Whitten and Macheli Flores of San Marcos; Christian Cervera of Lake Charles; Andrew Whitten and Elizabeth Orms of Cypress; Rain Cervera and Zach Hartnett of Lake Charles and Nathan Cervera of Houston. Mack was also extra fortunate to have 2 great-grandchildren who brought joy and laughter to his life - Harper Rose McNeil and Asher James Hartnett. He was also able to enjoy the companionship of his precious fur-baby, Murphy, who was his constant buddy during the last 6 years. Murphy was literally by his side until the very
end. He was always the life of the party. Mack loved to fellowship with his family and friends and tried to never miss an event.
To honor his fun-loving spirit —we have arranged for a Celebration of his Life Memorial Service, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at 2:30pm at West Houston Christian Church at 11300 Wilcrest Green. A gathering will be held immediately after the service. The family would like to thank everyone for their messages, calls, and prayers as they navigate this new road in life.
“We take comfort in knowing that Mack was saved so he is with Jesus!”
**Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons - Matthew, Rex, Bradley, Zack, Christian, Andrew, and Nathan**
