She was a veteran of World War II and served in the US Navy WAVES as a Pharmacist Mate, Second Class. Margaret grew up in Illinois and was active in the 4H Club and was a pianist for her local church. Margaret met Robert (Bob) Smith, while in the US Navy. Margaret and Bob were married in September 1944, and were married for 47 years until Bob’s death in 1992. After the end of WW II, they settled in Springfield, Illinois, before moving to Texas in 1953 with their children to begin a new chapter in their life. Margaret was active in her church, First Baptist Houston, in various volunteer positions. She was especially proud of her involvement in the Girl Scouts of America from Troop Leader, Cookie Committee Volunteer and several stints as a volunteer adult trainer. She was awarded a Girl Scout Lifetime Membership award from the National Girl Scout Organization.
Margaret is survived by her son, J W Smith (Linda); daughters, Elyse Taylor-Thees (John), Barbara McDowell (Greg Sr.), Nancy Reynolds (Mike) and Judi Powell (Steve). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
