Margot Gesine Schmidt Schurig passed away peacefully on Wednesday, the 15th May 2019, at age 85. She was born on the 17th January 1934, in Bremen, Germany to Lucinde Neumann Schmidt and Gottfried Schmidt.
Margot grew up in Bremen with her parents and younger brother. Around 1950, after surviving many trials and tribulations through World War II, Margot and her parents immigrated to Hallettsville, Texas where her brother, maternal grandparents and her aunt’s family were living. She worked for her uncle in the cotton business which was very prevalent in that area. Soon after, she found herself moving to Houston, making lifelong friendships and starting her family.
Margot was very active in The Women’s Club, Tuesday Musical Club, Houston Garden Club, German Book Club, Houston-Leipzig Association to name a few. She was an active patron of the opera, arts and theater which she enjoyed going to on a regular basis. Margot enjoyed traveling with her family on various road trips through southern United States as well as sharing the wonders back in Germany with her children while visiting her family that remained in Bremen. She eagerly celebrated the accomplishments of her daughters, Renate and Christina, as well as her grandsons, Graham and Haydon.
Margot is preceded in death by her daughter, Renate Schurig; her parents, Lucinde and Gottfried Schmidt; her brother, Werner Schmidt; her daughters’ father, Charles Schurig. She is survived by her daughter, Christina Schurig Nieland; son-in-law, Jeff Nieland; her two grandsons, Graham Nieland and Haydon Nieland all of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Donna Schmidt; niece, Lucinda Kurtas (husband Lee Kurtas); grandnephew, Reid Kurtas; nephew, Raymond Schmidt; grandnieces, Emily and Allison Schmidt. Margot is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews in Texas and Germany.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Angelina, Robbie, Victoria and all our friends at Visiting Angels who helped Margot and her family over the last three years with her care. In addition, a special thank you goes to the doctors and nurses at Memorial Hermann Memorial City and Medical Center for their caring and professionalism.
The funeral service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 1st of June, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
Those serving as honorary pallbearers are Jeff Nieland, Graham Nieland, Haydon Nieland, Raymond Schmidt, Lee Kurtas and Reid Kurtas.
For those desiring, in lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that donations be made in Margot’s name to either Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
