OBITUARY
Marian Jue
22 September, 1938 – 18 February, 2021
Marian Wong Jue was a young girl in Hong Kong in the early 1950’s when she began the long journey of coming to the United States and pursing the American Dream. That journey ended on February 18, 2021 but not before and, against the odds, she became, not only the matriarch of the Jue families but, also, a larger-than-life icon in the Houston restaurant business.
David Jue met and fell in love with Marian in Hong Kong in 1954. They married and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and in 1962, Marian and David opened a small restaurant in Bossier City, called the Hong Kong Restaurant and the Beachcomber Night Club in Shreveport.
In 1968, the Jues moved to Houston and started a Chinese Food product store. David, who had studied to be a chef in Hong Kong, decided to transform the product store into the China Garden restaurant at 1119 Jackson. About ten years later, China Garden had to relocate to its present location because of the building of the George R. Brown convention center. Through Marian’s business acumen and tremendous work ethic, China Garden became the place to go for a delicious Chinese food business lunch. In 1997, Houston Mayor Bob Lanier appointed Marian as a director to the Houston Sports Authority Board and she literally helped to break ground for what would be Enron Field. Starting in 2003 and continuing to this day, crowds come to enjoy the wonderful cuisine before and after Toyota Center events as well as other downtown entertainment.
Marian believed that “God gave us two hands and two feet, it’s what you do with those that makes you what you are.” Her success in life is a testament to her hard work but Marian was definitely not an “all work, no play” kind of woman. She also loved to laugh and loved to live. She loved to make people happy and became “Mama” to all her friends and customers. Those who were fortunate enough to know Mama knew that her “joie de vivre” radiated into everything and no one will ever duplicate her zest for life. Mama was preceded in death by her loving husband, David; and her son, Wilbert. She is survived by her sons, Richard Jue and his wife Nancy, Cameron Joe, and her daughter, Carol Churchill and her husband Ronald W. III; as well as seven grandchildren, several sisters, a brother, many nieces and nephews and restaurant patrons who will miss her dearly.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 25th of February, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 26th of February, also in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Pastor Coleman Chong will serve as officiant. Virtual attendance may be accessed by visiting her online memorial tribute at GeoHLewis.com and selecting the “Join Livestream” icon in her Funeral Service information below. There, you may also share memories and words of comfort and condolence electronically with her family.
Interment will follow, via escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Avenue in Houston, following a procession from Geo. H. Lewis & Sons with a pass-by of the China Garden Restaurant.
Honored to serve as pallbearers during the services are Ben Berg, Paul Carr, Eric Ferguson, David Joe, Lou Savarese, and Joel Sprott. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Stan Lee, Tommy Joe, Ken Taylor, Hubert Mayer and Sing Wong.
KINDLY NOTE: in accordance with current state health and safety protocols, and for the safety of all our guests, facemasks and the practice of social distancing are required for attendance at all events.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in her name be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

Marian was a lovely lady, and was friendly and loving to everyone.
She smiled and spoke to everyone, and always had a beautiful smile.
She was also fun. Everyone that walks in to the China Garden receives a warm welcome. She will be missed by her family and all her friends. God Bless all her children. Love, Phyllis Ogden

China Garden was my late husband Fred King's favorite place for lunch downtown. He proudly introduced me to Marian not long after we were married in 2007, and she welcomed me warmly like an old friend. Because of his newspaper and city government work, Fred had gathered there for lunch at China Garden with friends and co-workers for many years. He loved the wonderful cuisine, excellent service and the exciting atmosphere where so much Houston news and business was discussed. Every time Fred took me there, Marian welcomed us and I was always impressed with her. She radiated a strength of character, friendship and joy in life that was a privilege to experience. I am glad to have met her.
My prayers are with her family.

I've known Marian and her family for most of my life. Been going to her restaurant since I was a kid. Not sure what I looked forward to more when going to the China Garden, the food or her back rubs. She will certainly be missed. Loved that lady.

Carol, Richard, and Family.
Your mother was great! She always was so kind to me, my family, and my friends. Your mother made everyone feel welcome like we were walking into her home.
I did not like lemon but your Mama's lemon chicken changed my taste buds.
Marty and I never made it to a Rockets game on time because we had so much fun talking to Mama.
So sorry for your loss,

We regret we weren't able to attend the visitation to express our condolences to Carole and all the family in person. Our first visit to China Garden was before the move to the current location. We have missed very few Christmas Eves since then and have wonderful memories of many other family celebrations there. Marian will certainly be missed.

Carol, Richard and the Jue family,
I live in Ohio now but whenever I visit my family (Toy’s) in Houston, China Garden, is one of my husband’s and my must “go-to” places. We have many memories from when we lived in Houston and when we visit now.
I am thankful I was able to view your mom’s memorial service. Many sentiments shared are memories our family will remember too! Your mom will be missed but I will see her someday in heaven.
Our condolences,
Maureen & Frank

I have to share a memory that my husband told me. He ordered food from China Garden at his workplace and his boss would not let anyone leave to get the food. He was told the food would be delivered and he thought nothing of it. When the food arrives, here comes Mamma up the escalator with all of the food!
We have lots of memories of China Garden. My niece's rehearsal dinner was one of them. It was amazing just like Mamma.
We will never forget Mamma.

Our sincere sympathy to Richard and Carol and all the Jue family. Marian was one of a kind. She always greeted us like family when we went to China Garden. For many years it has been our favorite place to share a meal and celebrate special events with friends and family. I regret that this past year during the pandemic we have stayed in quarantine and missed seeing all our friends and missing the great great food at China Garden. We will miss seeing Marian’s
Sweet face and pleasant personality when we are able to rejoin society. We send you our love and hope to see you soon.

I first meet Momma in 1969. My memories over the many years are wonderful. I am truly grateful for her constant smiles and warmth. Momma will always be an inspiration for me on how to live and share love and kindness to others. This gift has also been passed on to her children and grandchildren and will continue to live on. She is sorely missed. Peace be with all her family and friends.

Carol, Richard and family. My deepest condolences for the loss of your mother. I like so many others called her Mama. I started eating at China Garden when I went to work downtown in 1984. She was such a lovely person. Always greeting me with a smile and telling me I looked young and so pretty. My mama still talks about having her 85th birthday at your restaurant. You have such a wonderful family thank you for being my friend.

Carol and family: I'm so sorry for your loss of your mother. She was so special to me and all my family. We've known all of you for years, my Dad use to deliver produce to the restaurant. My most recent time with your mom was December 16th when I went to get gift cards for Christmas. She let me in when restaurant was still closed. I ordered dinner to take home and she said Merry Christmas your dinner is on me. Her heart was so big and full of kindness and joy. She will always hold a special place in my heart. My family love Mama and all of you Carol. Love Carol Bayer and family!♥️

I first met Marian in the mid 1970s when my brother called me and told me about the best Chinese food he had ever eaten ( it had to be those egg rolls ) .
He was right , the food was great but what was even better was the family that owned this restaurant. Marian was always there - leading from the front -making everyone feel welcome - remembering who you were and how she knew you - making human connections - making good food taste even better with her smile and shoulder rubs -
She will be missed by her family and her extended family of customers .

What a generous & loving lady your mother was to me & my family. She always had a big heart & loving spirit - all those years our family celebrated my father's many birthdays with a large banquet at China Garden. In recent years Marian was always at China Garden to greet us when we arrived for a meal. Often giving us extra food (free). The food was wonderful & plentiful. You will be so deeply missed. RIP Marian.
My deepest condolences to all of the Jue family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I first met Marian at the Jackson St. restaurant. Marian personality was even more wonderful than the food she served. I continue of course eating lunch and dinners at the new location when they moved. My friend Mike Driscoll who was County Attorney for Harris County for 16 years and I held "court" at China Gardens with friends and family many times. I will miss both Marian and David often in the days to come. Marian always made me feel like I was special, something I learned that she did with everyone who ate at her establishment. She was always nice to me and my family and friends. She was inspirational to me and I know to everyone who knew her.

Truly a Mother figure. Always with a smile on her face. Loved her coming up and rubbing my shoulders. She was understanding and gave out sage wisdom. All of it came from knowing bad times, and achieving a better, good life from her and David's hard work.
I will miss her very much. Marion rest in heaven. Give Blain (in the picture) a big hug for us. Be sure and find Craig, Raymond & Kathryne Elliott and give them a hug too.

We just knew Mama since 2008 but she was one of those rare people who could make you feel like you knew them for a lifetime. She was the consummate hostess, always seeing to it that your food was sufficient and your drinks filled. She got a real kick out of seeing others enjoy themselves. She never grew old because she never lost life's zest. She always took a genuine interest in each and every person. When she found out how much Carolyn liked cookies, she made sure Carolyn never left without a carry-out bag of cookies and called her the cookie monster. We will always treasure our times with Mama!

So many good times and memories exist in my life from the excellent family atmosphere, stellar service and extremely delicious food. I have been fortunate enough to share your tasty dishes and warm atmosphere with so many friends and family through these many years, I moved to Houston in 1979, and this was one of the first great restaurants in which I dined. I’ve been a steady customer since 1979. The friendly warm greetings by all were an added great benefit given generously by owners and staff. Momma Marian is missed, and the restaurant shall always carry her memory with it. I am devastated by her passing, but I know she passed her love and compassion to her family. Carol and Cameron always make me and anyone that I bring to enjoy with me feel special. You are already missed tremendously Momma Marian and always have a place in my heart. My deepest condolences to all of you.

My family and I are heart broken at the passing of our beautiful, loving, caring and kind Marian. There are no words to describe the great loss of this loving mother, grandmother and friend to all who met her. She always greeted us with a smile and loved all of us. We always came by China Garden after my daughter's appointments at M.D. Anderson. While leaving the hospital we passed a jewelry show in the lobby and Erica and I stopped to purchase some. I picked out a beautiful bracelet for Marian to thank her for all the years of serving us the delicious food we enjoyed. I still remember how surprised and excited she was when I gave it to her. Her memory is a blessing to all who were fortunate to know her. My sincere condolences to the family.

Our family has so many wonderful memories of China Garden and of the warm embracing hugs from Marian, from the time our dad, Judge Daggett began taking staff there for lunches to the Dagget family tradition of Christmas Eve dinner at China Garden every year, to my rehearsal dinner in 1994, to our dad's 80th birthday celebration--- we did China Garden take out at the retirement home for him because that was his favorite. Marian always had a warm smile and made you feel so welcome. China Garden is a jewel for the city of Houston and its precious gem, Marian will so be missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to you, Carol, and your whole family. I know the Judge will be waiting for that big Marian hug! Love and blessings, Terri Daggett Diraddo and family.

Marion was a treasure, and the joy she brought to so many lives will endure. In her presence you felt special and cared for in a warm and wonderful way. China Garden served far more than wonderful meals. There you could always find a warm, person-to-person welcome as demonstrated so beautifully by Marion. Whether it was the world's best vodka tonic, a comforting shoulder rub or a bright smile and friendly words, a visit with Marion never failed to leave one better able to face the challenges ahead. Over the years, China Garden was a meeting place for Andy and Martha Palmer, Lee Williams, Paul and Blanche Harrison and friends, Bunch and Barbara Eads and Charlotte and Jerry Dunaway, Norris Blevins, Denise Eaton and Cheryl Evans, the Jackson dinner club, Scott and Annelle Graham and the South Houston Choir Dinner Club and so many more. The Chinese New Year's celebrations organized by Barbara were especially memorable. So grateful for the times with friends made more special because we met at China Garden. Deepest condolences to her family, countless friends and customers like me who cherished knowing her.
